Hi all,

In Perth, West Australia, home of NetEA (and Onyx ;) ) we are in the throes of a campaign leading to a tournament day in the next 3+ weeks.

The Perth scene is typified by a few themes:
- many teleporting Terminators, both Loyal and Chaos
- an army with hordes of Scorcha's, a veritable quintillion of them
- Titan lists, i.e. AMTL, Eldar and Ork
- Some Minervan
- Many IG SL
- 2-3 Necron armies, all off board

As a player, i always find it difficult to handle the Terminators. I feel i learn gradually how to handle the other unit types, though i guess my win/loss is still average, but the teleporting Termies are an issue for me.

The tournament army is using the current Army List compendium, is for 2000 points and is using the GT map set up/rules.
Considering the above, what would typify a good 2k list?

Tee

Quick question before I comment. What size tables and how much terraine are you using?

6' x 4' tables with approximately 12 pieces of terrain as per the rules for the tournament scenario.

I quite like the following list Tee:

REGIMENTAL HQ [550] - Supreme Commander, 12 Infantry, 7 Chimera, Hydra (BTS)
MECHANISED INFANTRY COMPANY [450] - Commander, 12 Infantry, 7 Chimera, Hydra
ARTILLERY BATTERY [250]
SENTINEL SQUADRON [100] - 4 Sentinels
SENTINEL SQUADRON [100] - 4 Sentinels
WARHOUND TITAN [275]
WARHOUND TITAN [275]

You saw in our game yesterday that I had difficulty in killing enough Chimeras to slow the Mech Co down. Double the number of Chimeras and double the job of slowing you down.
The artillery is there to make sure no place is safe on the board.
The Sentinels are there to keep teleporters away and are cheap activations.
The Warhounds are a good firepower/speed combo.

Unfortunately, the BTS is also the Supreme Commander but it not likely that the formation will be wiped out unless you're unlucky.

The key is using the 2 large infantry formations in FF engagements. You'll usually outnumber the target and often by 2:1. Place BM's on the targets as well (Sentinels or artillery) to give you more advantage. You also have the Commisar Inspiring bonus. All that means you should have a good chance in FF engagements.

I don't have a huge amount of experience using Guard (I played them a lot a few years ago when I was first learning the game) but I've played against them a lot recently. When they're aggressive and the formations are used wisely, I find I have more trouble with them than when they sit back and play defensively.

You want the other guy having to react to your moves not playing to their tune.
You will lose units/formations during a game but if you lure the other guy into killing a less valuable formation in an isolated position on turn 3, he can't claim or contest objectives. If teleporters come down in the middle of nowhere to kill an isolated formation, they can't reach an objective to help win the game.

Little things like this may be helpful.

Honestly Tee, you have come a long way since you first started playing. You understand all the basics of your army so now it's time to take the next step. So what if you have a SR of 2. Don't be overly cautious and I reckon things will change quite soon!

I'm sure there'll be some much more useful advice from the helpful people here!

Steve.

I like the look of Onyx's list, the mechanised infantry work well supporting the warhounds in engagements, and you're plenty fast enough to threaten objectives, use the sentinels to screen stuff vulnerable to teleporters and try to keep everything in mutual support range where possible

I agree that this is a good basic army for 2000pts.

Quote:
REGIMENTAL HQ [550] - Supreme Commander, 12 Infantry, 7 Chimera, Hydra (BTS)
MECHANISED INFANTRY COMPANY [450] - Commander, 12 Infantry, 7 Chimera, Hydra
ARTILLERY BATTERY [250]
SENTINEL SQUADRON [100] - 4 Sentinels
SENTINEL SQUADRON [100] - 4 Sentinels
WARHOUND TITAN [275]
WARHOUND TITAN [275]

I would be tempted to drop the Mech Company to a standard company and use the extra 150pts to take some Rough Riders. I'd also say that on a full sized table 2000pts is quite small.

also, be less afraid of engaging chaos terminators, not having ATSKNF means they die to hackdown hits much more readily than normal marines, I wiped a formation out with a bog standard infantry company last week for the loss of 3 infantry....

2k works great in 4x4 tables, 6x4 is a bit too big for 2k. Rough Riders are good because they can block parts of the table. Artillery and long-ranged direct fire very good given how much empty space there will be.
