Post subject:  Mech Inf in transports - worth it?

Hey guys
I'm a new IG player with one game under his belt (a total disaster might I add...)
One thing I did notice was - having previously played Marines/Eldar/Nids - that my infantry has no save.
So if I'm moving them to a destination, is it worth placing 16 bases in contact with the vehicles like I do with marines in rhinos? Can they not just stay in the vehicles?
My rationale is
A. it's a hassle to keep moving them with the transports on table
B. If the vehicle is shot and destroyed, the infantry get a 6+ save they wouldn't normally get
C. Cover from being in base contact with the vehicle is much of a muchness vs the save from being inside

So am I missing something?
Of course if/when they are to actually do something they'll disembark but that's a different animal/role.

Thank you
Steven

remember that your opponent will hit both infantry units automatically if they're mounted up, it's MUCH safer to jump them out

and you dont get a 6+ save against MW (which I found out painfully against revenant titans last weekend!)

there are advantages to being mounted, you can single move the vehicle's move, then jump out and shoot, if you're not mounted you'll need to double, also if you're engaged and your transport has a move of 30cm or greater, you can countercharge 10cm, then disembark 5cm, which means you can get many more units into combat if desired (particularly handy with ogryns)

Unless you are on the defense, you should have to move your infantry faster than walking speed ... You dismount too late you become a two-for-one target, too early, you lose mobility ... If you can't figure out how to use Infantry correctly , just use tanks ... Image

As useful a comment as tits on a bull.
So by the same rationale if you stall the car on your first ever driving lesson you should forget to about ever getting a license correct?

That was a bit of a joke ... note the funny Ork smilie ... Image However, my statement about dismounting is still very valid. I've used it in many games ... And by a weird chance, I commanded Mech Infantry (M113s which Rhinos look an aweful lot alike !) in my previous career, probably before most guys here were born. :spin That being said, I'll mention a few other "tactics". Image Always move units, Infantry, Mech, Armor, etc. under cover as much as possible. Don't bunch up. Move from cover to cover. Dismount from transport, under cover closes to the Objective(OBJ). Image Lay down suppressive fire from other from units under cover in over watch postitions on to the enemy on the OBJ. Attempt to assault the OBJ from the flank. Call-in fire from Artillery, mortars, and airstikes as soon as possible to suppress the OBJ, before the assault. Based on a over a decade as an Infantry Officer ('79-'90). And numerous games since then. So there are no guaranties, but that could help ... Better than tits on a bull ... Image
