So you may have noticed I've been talking about Valkyries, Vultures, and thier kin recently. Here is the result.

First a caveat. This list is not intended as a replacement or competator to the Elysians or Harakoni lists. While it shares similarities with both, I feel it has a niche apart from either of the other Airborne lists.

The Miral Skyraiders are for all intents and purposes A 40k version of the 1Cav (Airmobile) during their time in Vietnam. The planet of origin and name are of no real consequence, simply being easier than trying to explain they're different Catachans. Miral is listed in my 40k 3ed rulebook as a class Delta-tau (Deathworld) Planet, and has no other history that I can see, including descriptions of terrain or galactic location.

I envision Miral to be a Jungle Deathworld, similar to Catachan, but more mountainous across much of its surface. The Jungles are dense enough to prohibit movement of even Sentinel-type scout vehicles, and dangerous enough to make passage by ground troops difficult. Thus most maneuvering off established roads is done with aircraft. Hills or small mountains tend to dominate the tactical landscape, being suitable to turn into hilltop firebases to provide indirect fire support to nearby ground forces.

I see two types of build being possible with this army. Both will tend to have significant air support, so I've included T-Bolts, Lightning Strikes, Marauders, and Marauder Destroyers

One build type is an Airmobile infantry force backed up by other Airmobile elements, composed primarily of Vultures - the standard AT loadout, the AP Punisher loadout, and a unique "Slick" loadout, that is a recon and observation variant with no underwing stores.

The other build type is again Airmobile Infantry, but instead with support from fortified field artillery and antitank/AA guns. I've chosen the Baran Howitzer/Gotterdammerung and Blitzen AA gun for these roles, as they best fit the mold of field artillery. The Howitzer is BP only, with a reduced range compared to the Earthshaker, and I think fits the role of a 105mm gun pretty well. The final firebase formation is a Mirali Company in Bunkers as general defense.

So take a look, tell me what you think!

A bit bigger, perhaps, but more or less similar.

Neat! My current INF project should be able to handle this nicely as a side effect if I nick all my valks from the drop regiment :) Granted at the rate I am painting nowadays this is going to be a while...

Thanks for reposting!

Just curious. With all the airborne lists now, could they be condensed somewhat into one list given all the crossover of unit types...? That way you could redesignate it as "IG Air Cav core list" etc so anyone could essentially build their own airborne army and name it as they see fit just like the Codex Marine list....

It would take some haggling - there are at least two, maybe three basic infantry types, to start. I personally would pefer more focused lists anyway.

However, that's one reason I haven't pushed this list - saturation.

No worries. I'm keen to try one eventually as I have Catachan infantry and like the SF/airborne idea. Are those 2-3 inf types really different?

One of the real limiting factors of these types of lists is that there is no off table artillery option in Epic.

So representing the light front-line units with division level support just isn't possible.

Thanks for the input Rug. I'll have a think later today.

I agree Meph, though I'm not sure what can be done without someone crying foul. It may be worth looking at this as well.

Well a unit type for off-board arty, single shot etc. Then a special rule that stated used off-board assets count as destroyed in the case of a draw would be a place to start I guess.

Then its a support choice in a list x points for y off-board.

Though it's never as simple as you first think.
