Just some preliminary ideas for a an IG landing force concept:

Army Concept: IG planetfall beach-head force, in the tradition of the mass-landings at Omaha, Sword and the other D-Day beaches, incorporating the combined arms method of the modern US Marine Corps.

Core Formations:
Command Formation + Colossus Lander
Infantry Formation + Colossus Lander
Leman Russ or Conqueror Formation + Colossus Lander

Support Formations (two per core):
Mounted Platoon: Standard Infantry in Valkyries
Vulture Flight: Four Vultures
Lightning Flight: Four Lightning Interceptors
Marauder Bomber Element: Two Marauder Bombers
Marauder Destroyer Element: Two Marauder Destroyers
0-1 Marauder Vigilant: One Marauder Vigilant Electronic Support Aircraft (possibly used to grant 0-1 Marauder Destroyer, Titan Killer (1), per turn, maybe some other form of accuracy alteration)

Just bandying around the idea, working with the idea of heavy air support replacing the vastly harder to transport Super Heavies and Titans.

Is there another Lander option than the Colossus?

For example could set it up such that the Infantry and HQ Co.s can either upgrade to having Valkyries or take the Colossus as a Supporting Formation.  Valkyries get Planetfall.

So

Core
1+ Orbital Support (Lunar/Emperor)
HQ Company (12 Infantry + 1 Supreme Commander)
Infantry Company (12 Infantry + 1 Commander)
Tank Company (10 Tanks)

Upgrades
Two may be taken per Core Formation
Note only Infantry may take Valkyries

Valkyries (7 Valkyries) if Valkyries are taken the unit can not be transported in a Colossus
Fire Support (4 Fire Support)*
Snipers (2 Snipers)*
Ogryns (2 Ogryns)
[i]* These formations may take Valkyries at a cost of ## per Valkyrie; you must take enough Valkyries for the entire formation to ride in them, but you may not take more than one Valkyrie per unit in the formation

Support
Up to 2 may be taken per Core formation
Storm Trooper Platoon
0-2 Pathfinders (New Unit: Infantry w/ Scouts, Infiltrate, New Gear: Targeting Beacons allows the player to target any orbital weapons / planetfalls within 30 cm LOS of a Pathfinder unit)
Vulture Squadron (gets Planetfall)
Colossus

IN Support
Up to 3 may be taken per Orbital Support formation
Lighting Air Superiority Fighters (2 Lightings)
Thunderbolt Multi-role Fighters (2 Thunderbolts)
Marauder Bombers (2 Marauder Bombers)
0-1 Marauder Vigilant: One Marauder Vigilant Electronic Support Aircraft

Marauder Vigilant allows for one orbital weapon/planetfall to be targeted at a location within 5 cm of the Vigilant's most recent flight path, if the Vigilant is recovered during the End Phase.  The action will not scatter.

Orbital Support/IN formations would be crucial to this army as it is the source of their Anti-War Engine firepower.  So a key thing imo is to allow the player to attempt to retarget as the game develops.  This is what the Pathfinder formation and Vigilant let them do.  The Vigilant has a delayed effect until the next turn while the pathfinders are more immediate.

Is there a model of the Colosus available?

No, it didn't reach the final version of EA,

You make a good point Orangesm - it would certainly give the list more flex room - hmm, thanks for the feedback, I'll certainly incorporate it in the list preliminary versions.

My plan is to scratchbuild something not dissimilar to the Landing Craft on the current IG Codex cover.

I might have a list done by tonight/tomorrow

I love the idea of a Guard Air Mobile Landing force, has anyone made or seen for sale suitable landers?

I have a Revell plastic Star Wars Stormtrooper carrier form one of te newer films, not put it together yet but that may make a very good large  infantry lander.

For truely awsome armour lander the Mech Warrior limited edition Mech Lander would be ideal, a friend of mine, who plays mech Warrior has two but refuses to part with them.  They are very rareon Ebay, I've only seen one.

But if anyone knows of any :p

I was just blu-tacking together one of the unreleased imperial guard lander models I'd acquired last night actually. They're a bit old-school but are nice models :)

L4 converted one here (replacing 4 more little gun turrets like the two at the front with little hemisphere):

You can't make this list without including the Arvus Lighters.  Those things would be perfect for a mass dropping of troops and would add some hard tactical choices to the IG player since it is just a lightly armed tin can falling from the sky.

As for the model GlynG has shown above, I believe Otterman can illuminate many with his knowledge of where to obtain these models.
