Of course all this has to be balanced against the function of the army too.  The Necrons should technically be SR5 but people are calling for them to be SR2, or even SR1.

I think the whole "sneak attack" thing could be put under a "variable strategy rating" rule; I've done similar things in my Alpha Legion and Blood Axe Mercenaries lists...

"Sneak attack" armies should be able to get an inital surprise... actually, I think I argued for Dark Eldar to have something like that as well... *LAUGH*

However, while they may be one of the best Rapid-Reactioin forces, that refers to battlfield deployment not their general command and Control capabilities, which would seem to be on par with IG in general.

I would be forced to disagree, if this was any other drop regiment then I would agree with these valid points.  The Elysians are a seperate entity and are widely renowned as having superb officers and calling any superior officer who doesn't consult Elysian officers before devising a plan of action involving the drop regiment an incompetent commander.

How about giving them a special rule to the effect that their strategy rating is '3' or even '4' in turn #1, reverting to '2' thereafter?

Not a bad idea in theory but many Drop troop players would not drop in on the first turn.  If they could have a decreasing Strategy rating of: #4 #3 #2 #2 #2 #2 over turns 1, 2, 3, etc to represent the shock of the Elysian assualt and the troopers understanding of what needs to be done at the beginning then gradually as hell breaks lose comms wear down till they have the same amount of control as a normal regiment.

From Imperial Armour 4:
The D-Company of the 99th Elysiam Regiment consisted of:

- 1 Command Section (one base) with two Valkyries
- 4 Infantry Platoons consisting of 1 Command Squad (1 base) with Valkyrie , 4 Squads (8 bases) with 1 Valkyrie each, 3 Sniper Teams (1 base) and one Special Weapon Squad (1 base)
- 4 Drop Sentinel Squadrons (3 Sentinels each)
- 4 Vultures
= 72 bases/units

For comparison an Infantry Company of the 266th Cadian Ragiment consisted of:

- 1 Command Section (one base) with Chimera.
- 4 Infantry Platoons consisting of 1 Command Squad (1 base), 5 Squads (10 bases) and 3 Sentinels each.
- 1 Heavy Weapon Platoon consisting of 1 Command Squad (1 base) and 12 Heavy Weapon Squads (12 bases)
= 71 bases/units

So while the Cadians have a lot more Infantry the Elysians have more transporting/scouting vehicles but the unit count is roughly the same.

Note that the D99 is not a typical Elysian regiment, it's a specialist regiment composed entirely of veterans.

The 23rd elysian in IA 3 would be more typical than the d99.  But every regiment is slightly different.  In Taros they were used in a semi-suicidal move to secure a water processing plant. (They went in with little to no intelligence at half strength as they didn't have enough Valkyries to deploy the whole formation).  However, in IA3 if you read the Elysian report on what happens it tells of the officers leading from the front by example.  With officers gaining field promotions for outstanding bravery etc.

This current list is the kind of force that I imagine attacked the water plant on Taros.  Poor intelligence, under-equipped, not able to deploy all regimental assets.  The fact Elysians employ drop canisters to allow them some measure of fire support in the form of  heavy bolters, missile launchers etc.

Hmmm your're right. It says so in the companys description (but not in the TO&E chart)"Elysian Drop Troop Veterans" All have BS4 and are Xeno-Fighters (Tyranids).

Well here the breakdown of a Company of the 23rd Elysian Drop Troop Regiment from Imperial Armour 3:

- 1 Command Section (one base) with 1 Valkyrie
- 4 Infantry Platoons consisting of 1 Command Squad (1 base) with Valkyrie , 4 Squads (8 bases) with 1 Valkyrie each.
- 1 Heavy Weapon Platoon consisting of 1 Command Squad (1 base) with Valkyrie , 4 Heavy Weapon Squads (4 bases) with 1 Valkyrie each.
- 3 Vultures
= 51 bases/units

So significantly smaller but only because they have no attached Sentinels.

And here a Light Infantry Company of the 17th Tallarn Regiment (from Imperial Armour 3, too):

- 1 Command Section (one base) with 3 Sentinels.
- 5 Infantry Platoons consisting of 1 Command Squad (1 base)and 5 Squads (10 bases).
- 1 Heavy Weapon Platoon consisting of 1 Command Squad (1 base)and 6 Heavy Weapon Squads (6 bases).
= 86 bases/units.

The drop company doesnt have attached sentinals as they are a seperate company under the command of their own officer:

- 1 Command Sentinel with 2 Sentinels.
- 5 Drop sentinel squadrons consisting of 3 sentinels
- 1 Support Sentinel Squadron of 3 sentinels

= 21 sentinels

Sentinels in drop troop forces seem to provide a different role to infantry regiments where they are a scouting/recon asset compared to a light armoured support asset.

This is a reasonable idea and not that difficult to implement. Let's keep this idea on the table and when this phase of testing is complete, we can look at what the mechanics should be.

My reasoning for looking at this change is that although I believe that logistics has a lot to do with a Strategy Rating, I do agree that once "in theatre", the Elysians should have some acknowledgement of their rapid strike capabilities.

Well put guys!

Cheers,

Yup - this was designed to keep the Valkyries under control.  Otherwise you get too many BPs and it unbalances the formation.

I recommend reading the BlackLibrary novel "Dark Apostel". There the Elysians are featured.
They all came in via Valkyries and dropped on the head of the defending Word Bearers.

A question came up to me regarding Teleport:
If Teleport is the means in Epic to represent the Elysians droping from high altitude Valykries via gravshutes. So why can't enemy aircrafts intercept these Valkyries?

Just checked, Elysians jumped off Valkyries that were flying in extreme alttitudes, higher that Marauders could fly.
So it makes sense to allow teleport/planetfall.
Valkyries used in this manner could not be intercepted because they fly in high alttitudes. (theres no time for aircraft in CAP to get to them before they are long gone or even know they are coming)
Any updates coming this summer?
