I'm winding myself up to collect and play with a 'proper' Epic army.  The thing is, the number of IG lists available don't go well with the fact that I'm too indecisive for my own good.
I can look at a list and pick up it's basic theme. (Minervans = tanks, Elysians = drop troops, etc.)  I think I'd have to put myself away if I couldn't do that much.  But one thing that's fairly opaque to me, for any system, is how an army plays or should play - and thus whether I'd enjoy playing it - based on a look at the army list.  Strengths and weaknesses, stategy and tactics, theory and practise, and so forth.

I'm not looking for in-depth tactica (although one or two tricks might be welcome) but would anyone care to help me make a decision and give me an idea of the intended or actual style of their favourite IG lists, or personal suggestions and recommendations?

Well, what's your playing style?  That might help narrow things down a bit.

The Steel Legion list, right out of the main rulebook, allows for a *lot* of variety instead of the more narrow focus of the "specialized" lists, so you might just want to go that route.

Well, what's your playing style?

I had a feeling I'd be asked that.  Thing is, I don't really know. (Which probably renders this topic moot)  Despite long interest I've only started playing Epic regularly, with an SM force, in the last few months.  And only starting to get to grips with both.

So, yes, the vanilla Steel Legion list is a safe bet for a noob.

The Steel Legion list is good for a noob, unless you're really gripped by one of the alternate styles available I'd stick with that.

I would suggest you the following:

Begin with a generic Steel Legion list. It gives you a core of infantry, as well as all support you will probably need. Do a Few games, tweak around a bit and then decide which way you want to go.

- Add some (SH)Tanks, heavy support like Vultures etc... --> Minervans
- Add some more Infantry, sentinels, air power etc...  --> Elysians, any light infantry list
- Add some seriously heavy stuff.... ---> Admech list (Techguard?)

And you always have the option to play the good old bloody Steel Legion....

It´s the way I commend every new guard player....

And if you want a really true to background Steel Legion you could look after my homebrew armylist ;)
