I've recently purchased several armies off eBay, and I'm curious what people feel I can pare down on. Locally, I don't intend to play above 5000pts, so with regards certain things, what do people think I can fairly part with?

4 Baneblade Companies (+ 1 extra)
3 Shadowsword Companies
3 Leman Russ Companies
3 Artillery Companies
13 Hydra
3 Mech Infantry Companies
3 Infantry Companies
4 Stormtrooper Detachments

And a couple of other odds and ends (Deathstrikes, Bombards, Sentinels, etc).

Is there anything more people feel is necessary? I'm thinking the Stormtroopers need some Valks, and some Vultures'd probably be a good idea. But is there anything fundamental I'm missing, or anything in the above I just don't need that many of?

Always good to have around. But often perhaps on their own.
3 Shadowsword Companies
It's hard to see use for 9 Shadowswords. If you KNOW you're up against titans perhaps, but else one with two Baneblades perhaps?
3 Leman Russ Companies
Sounds fun, even if I prefer Baneblades, solo Baneblades with Commissar.
3 Artillery Companies
Two for a big battle. With 5 Basilisk and 4 Manticore each.
13 Hydra
One per company and 1 or 2 batteries for central AA cover.
3 Mech Infantry Companies
3 Infantry Companies
Mechanized for soaking up on the move. Pediatric for soaking up as garrisons. But perhaps not at the same time?
4 Stormtrooper Detachments
Always fun! And Valkyries! Garrisions!  :vD
And a couple of other odds and ends (Deathstrikes, Bombards, Sentinels, etc)
Never leave camp without your two Deathstrikes!
Bombards are probably usable, but Basilisks more versatile.
Sentinels are to slow to be really useful. But perhaps to add those last devastating shots? Else I'd use Rough Riders for objective capture etc.

With that number of Baneblades and Shadowswords I'd start converting a few of them so you could play a Minervan list without proxies.

I'd say keep it all and maybe get some Griffons, Hellhounds and Roughriders.

I dont like mixed artillery companies. If you have enough models you can get dedicated basilisk/manticore companies.

Personally so far I have preferred basilisk companies and manticore batteries.

As for the rest I have rarely used more than 2 of anything e.g. 2 Lema Russ Companies or 2 SHT companies. But if you regularly play games larger than 3000 points then youy might have use for them.

Four Baneblade companies sounds excessive though. That is 2000 points alone!! I cant imagine fielding anything more than 2 companies. The most I have ever fielded is 9 SHT's in 6000 points with 3 Baneblades and 6 Shadowswords. I know the baneblade improved in revised stats but I cant think of anything where you would ever need more than half a dozen Baneblades.

But for all this the important view is yours. You know what games you play and what sort of units you like to field.

In my view its simple: sell off anything that you know youll never paint. If its all painted, then Id start with selling some of those Baneblades - 2 Cos of each type superheavy should be enough. Thats my opinion anyhow.

Problem with this is that we are more or less just starting out. The games we have played have not even included aircraft yet as we are 'meating' out the rules.

We have both just bought to get armies to play. Now we have large collections to play with. Morgan however, unlike me, likes to keep what he will use and not keep the excess that (potentially) he will not.

Good question however. It will make me review my collection when I get back home....

Hahahaha

Clearly you do not know Morgan of the shaky hand.

If he were to keep to this rule, he would not be playing wargames and would mainly stick with card gaming

If you are not going to play above 5K, then I'd suggest you could loose at least:

2 Baneblade companies
1 Shadowsword company
1 Leman Russ Company
1 Artillery company
1 Mech infantry company
3 Hydra

That would still leave you with heaps.

You are lacking titans, but you don't necessarily need those.
Also some thunderbolts would be nice.

Heh.  You know asking people with hundreds of thousands of points worth of models "which ones should I keep?" might not result in the most productive answers...  :))

=====

Personally, I'd keep 2 companies of SHTs as-is and use the rest for conversions to other SHTs, as several people have suggested.

The arty kind of depends on the actual models.  I'd keep a company of each and a bombard battery or two (maybe a company of Bombards if you wanted to play them as a company in a friendly game).

The Hydras might be a bit much, but I'd definitely keep 8-10 for larger games.

Aside from that I'd keep it all, and since the above suggestions don't really suggest getting rid of any of it... that's pretty much "Keep it all."

Like I said... maybe not your optimal audience.
