Ok I am trying my best to come up with a Recon company for my rag tag motor brigade (which could morph into some sort of mech recon regiment if i can find some details of how its done irl in WII).

But I'm not happy. Available units are infantry, salamanders and sallie command, outriders and chimera, plus possibly IFV.

Not to keen on this being very common - which means it should have a role.

However list already has outriders for, well, outriding, and Salamanders for heavy recon. So what should a recon company do? What role would it have in epic? Not to keen on it being a company choice and getting upgrades, allowing support etc. But in that case what about flak? Stick in one of the AA tanks (Hydra or crappy IFV or Tallarn twin auto beasty if it makes the list)?

So, recon, what's it for and what could go in?

Traditional Recon Regts have changed to take on more than a reconnassaince role, encompassing now raids and such. Armoured Recon Regts are now fielded as cavalry, so fast moving with punch. I have a Recon Battalion, with companies base on Sallies and Sentinels, with Support Sentinels in there as well. No Infantry at this stage, but if so only one per sally. I also have some rough riders in there to. But these are held at the Battalion level not as part of the companies. You could however add the old guard bikes to the companies and filed mixed units to give it its own feel. I would consider using Valks as well as armed recon gunships to give them a little more firepower.

Cheers
Aaron

Yes, that sounds pretty good CAL. And it uses the Epic pieces available. WWII Recon forces were primarily Armored Cars, light tanks, vehicle mounted infantry (which could dismount and do patrols of foot, etc.) Maybe some light artillery or mortars.  In an Epic game they very well may be become decisively engaged in battle ... while they are trying to do a recon ...      ?

WW2 british recon also had plenty of Bren carriers and the like carrying 5 man squads- I think a salamander troop carrier would be an ideal way to represent this.

I dont know much about real recon companies- in epic where intelligence gathering is less  important ive always imagined they rush forward with the objective of identifying and fixing in place the lead elements of teh enemy forces.  Sort of like napoleonic skirmishers- trying to confuse and disrupt the enemy. wwhile the heavy elements catch up.

To that end they could be 2 things:
1) fast, lightly armoured and designed to get in, disrupt and bug out.  A fully armoured company would fit this well, composed of conquerers with maybe some attached bike outriders to provide CC cover
2) Fast deploying infantry with organic light fire support.  In a WW2 context they would be carrier mounted- so how about 6 salamanders with 6 Inf.  THey contest objectives or dig in to flanks and basically are an embuggerance.

The other roles of recon, such as intelligence gathering, should be represented in the strategy rating- so possibly give these troops an improved one.

Imperial Armour Apocalypse says Salamander Command, Chimera or Leman Russ Exterminator as HQ and 2+ Squadrons consisting of either 2 Salamander Scouts or 4 units Infantry (20 men) with 2 Chimeras.

Looks pretty fast. Would use it to outflank the enemy to grap the Blitz objective or harras enemy troops them from behind.

I've got outrider formations (6 strong) and salamander formations (4 strong) for roles filled by Sentinels and rough riders. So should there be a company as well? Should it be mixed? I guess it would be an objective grabber and forward garrison (filling the garrison role of infantry).

I do like incidentally 6 sallies and 6 infantry, if only because its easy!

Question is should they be able to get upgrades?

Should they have chimera, outriders, griffons or anything else?

And most importantly what about Flak? (The brits used jeeps with twin bren guns!)

Tallarn twin auto beasty

Are you talking about the Sabre platform with two autocannons?

Would that be a good unit for use by a recon formation?

All Recon units must be mobile. ?"Speed is Security". ?For example, our Scout Plt in 101 was foot mobile(after inserted by UH1s/UH60s) then later had motorcycles. In the 2ID in the ROK, our Bn's Scout plt had 7-9 Jeeps and eventually 3 M113s and 3 M901 ITVs. ?So all that being said, for Epic, I think Salamanders, Sentinels, Rough Riders, motorbikes, and maybe a couple of Griffins. In SM1 Rough Riders and IG Bikers could dismount, so they are more like Light Horse than Cav. ?So that could be your dismounted element option too. You could also use E/W ? tracks too as APCs (like the Germans, US and USSR, etc. did in WWII for some of their Recon elements), or just use Chimeras. ?One Bde I served in was not part of a Div., so it was designated 197th Mech Bde Seperate. It's CAV Troop (= to a Company) had M60 MBTs, M113 ACAVs, M901 ITVs(M113s with TOWs) and M106s(M113s with 4.2 inch Mortars). So that was a real Combined Arms Force ... ? ? ? ? ? ?So again, I guess the easy answer is Salamanders, Sentinels, Rough Riders, Chimeras and Griffons in you want a fairly well rounded, but not too light Recon Co. ?And add a section of Hydras if you are concerned about AA ...

Largely because I've over two dozen, lots converted to have lascannon and autocannon, and they are in the pictures in the Epic A rulebook!
