How would you translate that into game mechanics? It would be kinda cool to represent but limited in use. I.e. against chaos/Eldar avatars/Dark Eldar Warp Beasts

I've not read teh Eisenhorn series, care to give a quick run-down of your impressions of the battlefield function of the Pylons?

They're just mysterious Pylons that defy study situated at various places on cadia, the ones that featured in the book were close to but not inside any of the fortresses, I think the obvious xenos design kept them away. I wouldn't say they really have any battlefield affect beyond their warp disrupting effects. The theory is that the cadian gate exists solely because of the pylons on cadia & I think several planets with identical pylons in the Cadian sector.

The book goes into some detail on the Kas-r-Kin and the fortifications/procedures on Cadia. I recall Eisenhorn not really liking the Cadians because of their inability to remove the stick from their buttocks.

How much is the Leviathan worth? The only place I could find a cost was in the old EA Compendium Squat list where it was 300pts, although with CC/FF4, +1EA FF and Thick Rear Armour. Either way, the HQ pricing here implies a cost of only 150pts (going off Chroma's list where the Leviathan-less HQ was 350pts, plus the usual 100pt SC cost on top of your 250pt Karskin Co), which seems a bit on the cheap side.

One could be selected as an objective for free. Formations teleporting within 30cms don't have to roll for blast markers (disadvantage to the Cadians, warp calming effect of Pylon), no Daemons can be summoned within 30cms of the Pylon (advantage to Cadians... vs Chaos and Eldar Avatars anyway!). Thoughts?

Sounds fair to me, I know you guys are sticklers for adding special rules if they don't add anything to the game, so I generally hold my opinion back and let the more experienced of you decide on rules.

I really don't like the idea of the pylons which restrict this list to one defending cadia and add unneccesary special rules.

I think the question that should be asked is whether we're adding pylons for fluff reasons or whether they bring anything to the list tactically or in terms of flavor. Tactically, they don't do anything. They keep the Cadian Gate free of Warp disruptions, but on the scale of a battlefield, they have no purpose. IIRC, in the Eisenhorn Trilogy, they featured because there was a Chaos Cabal trying to blow them up with a Warp Rite. Obviously then, they do not completely damp Warp powers in the vicinity.

If we are adding them simply because they exist in the fluff, there's nothing stopping a player from making pylon objective markers even without special rules.

I don't really want to give away spoilers but they weren't trying to blow it up. You do make a good point though as there was quite a nasty Daemonhost present who didn't seem to be impaired in any way with proximity to the pylon.

Pylons do sound more like something that is nice for an objective marker, or a centrepiece for a scenario.

(BL's true Steel Legion... which incidentaly also has an HQ Leviathan!).

it does, sort of, but as far as I can tell it replaces a 300pt fm at a 100pt cost, so 400pts for the Leviathan, plus 100pts for a SC. So in comparison, in the Cadian list you get 8 Karskin units for free. I do also find it curious that you're using an extremely developmental list (BL's only just reduced the no. of chimeras to 1 per 2 squads for example) to support an argument in the same thread as you criticise someone picking up and developing an abandoned list. Just my 2c.

I'm sorry, what argument do you think I'm supporting?

I was just pointing out that BL's list also has a Leviathan and a Whiteshield like formation in. List identity and character has little to do with its in game balance. Your the one comparing points etc! As far as I can tell you've sunk your own argument, which I havn't even said anything about LOL!

If you want my 2 cents 500pts is a good shot in the dark as a start as, as you've pointed out BLs list is quite experimental! In addition to this the value of the Guard core formations does not always equate to the individual points of its components, the Steel Legion list is an excellent example of this.

yay, arguing with Rug again. I seem to remember this happening before with eldar titans and rangers - cue me getting bored with schoolyard pettiness and leaving the thread for better or worse.

the point was, I brought up the fact that I thought the Leviathan undercosted and the only response was "BL's legion has one". To which I pointed out that the Leviathan in BL's admittedly highly developmental list still costs more than the one in the new Cadian list and then you go on about sinking my own arguments and LOLing all over the place.

Instead, everyone seems to be obsessing about some pylons on Cadia, interesting as they may be. I wonder why I even bother sometimes..

I would encourage at least one special rule to reinfore the "Cadian identity" of the list.

This seems reasonable.

In fact, it might be good to work towards establishing a standard "IG Veteran" special rule. It would be in character for a number of forces, like Iron Guard and Praetorians, known for unusual fortitude. If it could be applied by formation, such a rule would also provide a way to make a sharper veteran/standard/green division and would be useful for something like Deathworld Veteran formations.

Elysians are using the "Iron Discipline" rule, and a lot of variants were discussed in the Squat/Demiurg to represent their steadfastness. I'm sure some minor Initiative bonus can be identified for veteran IG that don't turn them into Marine equivalents.

Kasrkin Co - better stats, initiative bonus (Iron Discipline or whatever)
Infantry Co - normal
White Shields - initiative penalty
