They're half way up the hill, and on top of it too (You can see the cannon emplacements).

Oops, I thought that was armor cresting the hill, not gun emplacements.  :upside: Never mind then.

This is the same universe where they bring a sword to a gun fight and wear brightly colored armor. Think visual candy, DS!

Yeah, good point. I really need to stop applying logic to the 40k universe.  :))

Yup - I think artistic license is  a good excuse for this one. I have to show the mountainous terrain of the setting and also make it look cool.  8v)   :D

Unlike the Raiders cover, which had the totally realistic Tormentor kicking the Leman Russ aside (all that was missing was a little bubble with the word "Plink!"

You're doing great, Stugmeister.  Keep up the good work and many thanks from all of us.

It'd make a great cover/inside cover shot.

Thanks for the big thumbs up Mosc, it appreciated.  8v)

Here's more progress. 1hr 30mins so far.

To be honest I'm not too happy with it. There's too much going on, I know it's a battle scene but there doesn't seem to be any main object in the composition to catch the eye...

If you want to change the composition radically, how about deleting the front trench line?

I know it's a big and painful change, but it does give more room for some feature stuff in the foreground like a Gorgon.

Heres some visions I get when looking at it, maybe they will help:

How about putting a hellhound in the fore ground, opposite the bunker in the front.  have it unleashing promethium into the trench and the bunker trying to take it out.

how about some men coming out of the back trench countercharging the front one?

you could also hide some of the busy-ness with fire/smoke plumes from the trenches or some of the craters as if this infantry charge is just after a barrage

How about a titan in the background dueling with the orbital guns on the hill.  that should fill that empty void feeling

Oh and Stug....GREAT work.  Your art is bringing to life the story of this supplement.  Its a driving force to keep me painting and wanting to now do the Mossinians AND White Scars.

Farseer - Thank you very much sir! :)
I'm so glad that what I've created has inspired others to go the extra mile! :D

------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks you very much everyone for all your crits and comments. As you can see I've been having real trouble trying to get this pic right and to be honest I just don't think it's gonna work. If i was doing this for just a normal pic then I'd probably finish it up as a hectic battle scene and leave it at that.

However, this is supposed to be the front cover image. I think we can all agree its not front cover material. If you look at any GW rulebook or codex they always have really good composition (generally) and although hectic, they do have a main focus point that tells a story. This pic cannot be altered to fit that bill.

Therefore, I have decided to start afresh! I had a little chat with E&C about what he wanted in the pic and this is what I came up with...

I think this is far more powerful and will also still allow me to show the epic scale of the battle. The Gorgon is the DKoK's iconic vehicle, more so in Epic - therefore it should be the main focus of the book's cover.

There's only one word for this picture.

Pwnage

Do you think there's space in the background on the left to put in some more distant Krieg forces advancing?

I really like the concept of the new design. A real work of art.

Pwnage hits the nail straigt on :D

Love the tiny Reaver in the background. Are this trenches at his feet? Very cool :)

thought the first one was great but this one is much better. captures the feeling of the army and epic in general.
