I've just recompiled it with a lesser level of compression... the images are now much better, but it's also bulked up to 10mb. :D

Reckon I should upload that version?

Gifs and jpeg are usually for web use only. Avoid these whenever possible for the best image quality. However most pics are jpgs nowadays (Unless you've got a semi-pro camera that can shoot raw or tiff files. As long as the image resolution on the jpgs is above 150 you should be ok.

The rule of thumb is: photographic style pics: jpg or tiff (Or psd if you use Indesign).
Stuff with large monochrome surfaces (Graphic elements), straight lines (like your gorgon sketch drawing), and text should be done as vector graphics and saved as .eps or .ai files.

Furthermore professional printers would usually want you to convert all images to CMYK color instead of RGB. RGB is intended for web use (though most home printers are calibrated to compensate for this) and CMYK is for print.
Again the choice has to be made: How many will print the stuff at home and how many will want the book printed like a professional book at a pro printers.

I did the Gorgon as a Vector Graphics piece, but can MS Publisher import vector graphics?

EDIT:

Saved it as an EPS but it's just importing a transparent square into Publisher.

Regarding the "Squeezing of text":
No I don't mean changing the font size. Again I'm not sure if Publisher can do this, but Indesign has options that allow you to alter the width of the individual characters and the spacing between them, as well as the spacig between lines of text. If you're don't overdo it, the compressed text won't look any different than the regular one, but allow you to fit more text in a given space. Useful for this sort of thing. :;):

Hmm. What program has been used for the vector graphic? Might be worth a try with other file formats. The important thing is just that it remains vector graphic in the finished pdf. A way to check this is to zoom in. no matter how much you zoom in on a vector graphic curve, it wil stil look smooth. a bitmap pic (like jpg.s or tiffs will start to look pixelated at about 300-400% (and if they look pixelated at less magnification you might want to get better pics)

Ok. Well you could try SVG format. I've never tried this myself but it might be worth a shot. Not sure what kind of file formats are importable by Microsoft products.

Yeah, it amazes me too how often cut and paste seems to work nowadays.

And one typo in first page on 5th paragraph

Receiving perhaps?

This reads fine to me unedited.  ???

Apart from the fact that the quote is made up of possibly the biggest grouping of made-up words in the whole document, I think it's okay. :)
