I played with Krieg for the first time last night and really enjoyed the game, it’s a great list, an army that feels and looks really awesome with all the lines of trenches and guns and I think it’s a style of army I’ll enjoy using. I’ll post up a report sometime in the coming days but wanted to add some thoughts and comments before I forget.

Trenchlines – is it deliberate that not all of an infantry company can fit in them? If so why? No possible option to pay and extra 25pts or whatever on top and get extra siege lines? At the moment you can’t even fit a whole basic I infantry company in, let alone if you add any extras. Also why is it you can have an infantry stand every 4cm? It just seems an odd number. Infantry stands are 5cm long and the standard forge world trenchline pieces are aprox 5cm or 10cm long so I just ended up protecting 1 infantry stand per 5cm. Am I really supposed to measure all the little sections and do the maths to see whether in total I may be allowed an extra man in an occasional section?

Though I definitely think the Heavy Mortars and Thud Guns should be speed 0 or immobile, there is an issue there however – if you have any speed 0 units in a formation that formation can garrison, no matter what else is in there. Garrisoning Death Rider or Gorgan company with Mortars/Thud guns in Centaurs anyone?

I’m still kina dubious about them but in time I am sort of coming round to the notion of separate units of 4 of these (plus 4 infantry stands) sizes of 4. They’d compete with other artillery or formations for support slots and be good short ranged, but lack the long distance of the basilisks (and also loosing a higher amount of effectiveness when they loose one or have one suppressed).

Infantry stands are 4cm, unless I'm mistaken.

Kind of a nuisance to find 12cm bases for trench terrain: you're right, 5 and 10 cm trenches are a good deal easier to deal with (not only because they are 'decimal' but they also amount to a fairly round number of inches (2 or 4).

Just picked up an Epic base, it is 4cm by 1.2cm.

The trench rules come straight from the Swordwind supplment. I may consider giving a little extra trench length to the Krieg, as they don't get razorwire.

I've done a few (need more) 'foxholes' for trenches, 5cm long each including the side bits, so I fit 10 siegers in 50cm. Doesn't help this discussion much, just highlighting a different way of doing your fortifications!

(Thought about this style for a while, did it after reading the entertaining 15 hours which had this system, also redoing bunkers so they look only a few mm above ground as obviously the best bunkers are not sheds!)

TRC,

So the "foxhole" looks like a standalone fighting position for an entire 40 mm stand, right? Like this?

The bunker thing has bugged me for years. I've never been satisfied with any idea. The main problem is where to place the models. If you model a low, "realistic" bunker, you then need to place the models somewhere, and putting them on the roof kind of messes with the idea of looking "realistic". Putting the models away is a non-starter. Putting them on a clear plastic roof (ala IanH) does not feel right.
