I used to like that tactic... after the first time it was done to me anyway. However, that can't happen any more. Infantry bases (even Snotlings hurled through a warp portal) can no longer gain extra D6's to their Caf against Titans. It would take a model of Knight/Superheavy (EA: Warengine) size class or larger.

Infantry is still key to any army. Never leave home without some. They can handle loads of situations if chosen and used wisely.

I find my infantry do a great deal of work even when I play Minervans and the only infantry is one mechanized formation.

For Steel Legion I generally like at least 3-4 Infantry Companies.

If there's cover near the center of the board IG are a nightmare to displace when they start there on Overwatch.

Yep. EA's all down to combined arms. Everything is pretty useless on it's own.

Tanks for example are vulnerable to infantry assaults. Expecially CC specialists. A Leman Russ, or Super Heavy Company would do well to have infantry to back them up. The infantry can block assaults on the tanks from enemy infantry, or provide supporting fire if the enemy does make BTB with your tanks - The tanks might suffer alot but the supporting infantry will ensure the attacker gets a lot of pain in return. Without the infantry backup the tanks are easy meat. A guard army made entirely of shadow swords, with their deadly volcano cannon, will never win; because of the way Epic is such armies just don't work.

Infantry don't have as good long range punch as Tanks (Though IG infantry are pretty good at it). They'll get hammered from a distance without a nearby tank formation to give it covering fire. They can hunker down in hard cover to give them a lot of protection, but then they're pinned in place. Infantry are usually better than tanks at taking and denying ground so they generally need to move.

And that's just the half of it, as others have noted above.

since just about everything in the EA universe has been said about infantry i'll say that simply, add the leman russ upgrade to an infantry platoon and its a simple combo to start with. Since you haven't played a game yet as soon as you get your gear just fool around with an army list. I also favor the Snipers upgrade ^_^
