So i just received another sound trouncing from the imperial guard. I'm wondering how other players deal with them. The following units just devestate me:
Russ Company: 4+ reinforced, and hard hitting... Super Heavy Company: Baneblades, Shadowswords, poor me... Artillery Company: Sustaining with 300cm range indirect (that sucks...) Mechanized Infantry: Why would anyone assault these, every formation I field is hopelessly outnumbered?
So the armies I've been field have been SM's and Ulthwe Eldar.
Just wondering what to field and general tactics against these fatherless children (since I can't express myself here in my general foul mouthed, yet more satisfying manner).
Last night I had:
2x Guardian Formations (w/ support weapon platforms, wraithguard) 1x Black Guardians (w/ Wave Serpents and a Falcon) 2x Aspect Troupes (banshees, dark reapers) 1x wind rider 2x Swords of Vaul (falcons and fire prisms) 1x scorpion 1x Seer Council Wraithgate Avatar
Didn't write up a BR, but first turn he broke a Swords formation with artillery, a couple formations failed to activate, and then my dice turned on me. I assaulted with my BTS guardian formation (seer council, wraithguard, weapon platforms) and didn't score a single hit. From that point on it was a mop up excercise for him.
Complaining done, now proceed with the teasing...

Hmmm... I haven't played Eldar in E:A before, but I know the general consensus in 40K seems to be to close with IG tanks as quickly as possible and assault them from the flanks, preferrably through teleport or skimmers taking advantage of cover. For the infantry, if you can disrupt their formations and then get something with good assault values in amongst them, especially where their artillery can't hit you for fear of fratricide casualties, then that might be a winning tactic.
But I'm sure someone here with some Eldar experience could give you more specific advice!

Storm Serpents. You can March the SS and still assault out of the gate. You can basically hit anything you want with large numbers.
Teleporting Swooping Hawks do a number on arty.
In general, you need more speed. You have 5 assault-oriented infantry formations on foot, plus the Avatar comes from one of them. Unless you get them stuck in quickly they will get chewed up so you need delivery mechanisms. Eldar are wicked on offense but absolutely cannot stand up to fire. The speed will also allow you to concentrate on smaller portions of his army.
As far as tanks specifically, you have to concentrate on formation until you pound it down. They are nasty and hard to get set up against but once you get a bite on them they fold up. It's amazing how much just a couple kills and the BMs from them will shrivel up a Russ Company. Once they are broken, press the attack. They're not fearless so each BM causes a kill and if you can manage to assault and win, they all die.

Terrain is also very important. The recommendation in the back of the book is 2x pieces of terrain per 2' sq of table, each 15cm-30cm accross (with hills up to twice that size). On the usual 6'x4' table this is 12 such pieces of terrain, or around 30%-40% coverage.
So you need to use the terrain to hide in or behind, which significantly reduces the shootiness of the IG, while Eldar skimmers can pop-up to shoot and then hide.
Finally, as the others suggest, you need to make use of the fast delivery systems of both Marines and Eldar. Teleporting formations, Air assaults and Eldar Wraithgates all keep the relevant formations off-table until needed and generally minimise casualties while delivering a hefty assault. Additionally, Eldar work best if you can use their hit-and-run abilities to use the winners of one assault to support the next.
