Give all the movement on IG lists I thought id throw something else into the mix that Ive been pondering for a while; namely a rough rider/light cavalry force.  Im thinking something akin to Australian light horse or Attilans deployed en-mass (if such a thing were ever likey to happen).  The basic premis is akin to mountain troops- they use nothing that cannot travel fast and light over very rough terrain.

So far I have got to something like:

Companies
-Hussars (12 Hussars)  *need better name*
-Light Infantry (IG command plus 12 light inf)
-Regt HQ  (12 Light Inf plus Regt Commander)

Support
-Outriders
-Hussars (6 Hussars)
-Sentinels (particularly AT patterns)
-Light Infantry Platoon (6 light inf)
-Light Support Battery (4 support pieces)

Upgrades
-Light Support Team (4 Light Support Units)

-----
Troop Types

Hussars-
These would essentially steal the stat line from deathriders pretty much.  Ie rough riders wthout scouting and infiltrate.  Essentially shock asault troops.

Outriders-
These are essentially rough riders minus the extra attack (but keeping first strike).  Justification being that roughriders are a bit overpowered in assaults and to place the onus of CC on the Hussars.  

Random thought- Perhaps you could have greater diversity of 2 scout types- one  with a CC emphasis, one with improved FF .  These could be mixed in an outrider platoon (Im thinking something similar to a kult of speed)

-Dismounting
For a while I have been musing about how best to represent light horse infantry that would ride to a position, dismount and get into cover but retain the ability to redeploy rapidly. I would like to try something like:

Dismount
Troop types with the dismount special rule are able to switch between being mounted and dismounted and have two speed values.  The first counts when mounted, the second when dismounted.  When dismounted units count as infantry for terrain effects.  Units may mount and dismount at the start and end of any move.  Also certain weapons can only be used when dismounted.  These will have Dismounted listed in the weapon notes.

-Light Infantry
Move  20/15    Save 6+  CC 6+  FF 5+

Weapons
Autocannon  AP 5+, AT 6+     Dismounted

*notes- 1 autocanner per every two units in formation

-Light Support Battery
Move  20/15    Save 6+  CC 6+  FF 6+

Weapons
Field Howitzer (same stats as Griffon)
Hellstrike Missile System 30cm, AT5+, AA5+

-Light Support Team
Move  20/15    Save 6+  CC 6+  FF 6+

Weapons
Autocannon Dismounted

Bit ofa brain dump, but its good to expunge the distracting thoughts and its something different at least :)  Ive purposefully avoided costings too as my brain is not up to it :p

PS- As an alternative thought it may also be nice to design a mechanised recon regt  fitted out with salamander scout vehicles, vultures, conquerer tanks and bike troops.  Although I guess it would be possible to build something similar using the armoured regt list.

Hussars/Heavy Cavalry - I suggested that Death Riders get an Armour upgrade in the Death Korp list just to 5+ they are suppose to be shock troops.

I like the Dismount rule.  I would name the company size unit - Mounted Infantry.  The unit is not meant to assault on horse back, it has Small Arms while mounted that is it.  When they dismount they have missile launchers (same stats different name - easier to carry on the horse I would think).

Outriders - make these the standard rough riders, especially if the Hussars are made heavier armour wise.

Mounted Infantry
Infantry 20cm/15cm    Save 6+  CC 6+  FF 5+
Weapons
LasCarbines (15cm) Small Arms
Missile Launcher 45 cm AP5+/AT6+ Dismounted
Notes: Mounted, Dismounted

Light Horse Artillery
Infantry 20cm/15cm Save 6+ CC 6+ FF 4+
LasCarbines (15cm) Small Arms
2 x Missile Launcher 45 cm  AP5+/AT6+ Dismounted
or
2 x Lascannon 45 cm AT 5+ Dismounted
Notes: Mounted, Dismounted

Heavy Horse Artillery
Infantry 20cm/15cm Save 6+ CC 6+ FF 4+
LasCarbines (15cm) Small Arms
Field Howitzer (Heavy Mortar) 30 cm cm  1 BP  Indirect Fire Dismounted
or
Hell/Skystrike Missile Launcher 30cm, AT5+, AA5+ Dismounted
Notes: Mounted, Dismounted

WOuld be nice to see this built - I'm not volunteering, not enough time, not enough horses. But it would be nice.
As an aside - a nice twist on this twist would be a Knight force with Rough riders in support..

I have what I called a "Cossack Brigade" - 3 RR units plus a HQ units that is the same as a Inf Plt HQ but on horseback.  I even converted a riding Colonel fig!

Thanks for the comments guys.  I *may* have just enough rough riders to pull this off as an aternative force org.

@Orangesm-  Thanks for the comments, that realy helps pull things together.  Just a few thougts though:

1) For Heavy cavalry- im unsure about the armour upgrade.  For the DKOK isnt this due to the use of "bionic" os's.  If so I would be wary of introducing it for this force....

2) Do people think that the standard RR are a bit OTT on assault with 2 attacks, first strike and infiltrate?  Mind you, probably isnt that mush of a problem if appropriately costed.  If this became a unit of standad RR then I would be very keen to introduce a FF focused outrider unit for variety and could also replace the sentinels with it.

3) for the mounted infantry and artillery- do you thnk there is a problem being able to use the FF mounted?  This is something I was wondering- is it worth introducing split FF statistics to encourage you to use these troops properly (ie dismounting).  Or does this make the stats too complicated.  I like the ideas of using missile launchers instead too.

Hmm, thoughts beginning to gerinate... must avoid disractions and go to uni......

Now this is going to sound weird, but I was only thinking of a pure IG cavalry force yesterday evening  :alien:  :alien:

The one addition I have is a mounted support weapons platoon, autocannon mounted on a Tchanka (think thats how its spelt), basically a 4 wheeled horse drawn cart. Soviets used them in there cavalry/cossack units in both WWI & WWII. Didn't come up with a stat line because I'm too lazy  :D

Anyway, just my 2 penneth worth.

I think that they are wearing some decent armor and they are mounted.  Their armour is probably comparable to Storm Trooper armour.  It also makes people more likely to use them in close combat.

Could come up with a different set of stats here, but RR are suppose to be Scouts that can provide a solid assault force if need be.  It may be worth not using the RR stats in the list at all... just as a basis.

Sure why not have a split FF.  So 6+/5+ would work alright.  Also just a quick sentence in Dismounted should clear it up.
