So I am exiled to Bangladesh again, land of one other epic gamer. So off I go for a game/chat. We used marines and discussed the list in particular. From a flexibility point of view and related to all my old notes I?ve been posting and finally something for older players who tend to have such miniatures in packs or three.

In essence what would be the in game effect of mixed armour formations and mixed upgrades. That is restructuring predator, vindicator and whirlwind detachments and upgrades into the following.
Armour ? Any four of the following; Predator Annihilator, Predator Destructor, Vindicator ? 275 points
Support ? Any four of the following; Whirlwind, Hunter ? 300 points
Tank support upgrade (replacing hunter and vindicator upgrades) ? One to two of the following; Predator Annihilator, Predator Destructor, Vindicator, Hunter ? 75 points each
Whirlwind upgrade (support formation only) ? One to two whirlwinds ? 75 points each

From fiddling about we thought the armour formations would still be single type, with maybe the vindicator formation including a Predator Destructor for random shot at longer range, and the support formation would be, 3 hunters and a whirlwind or 4 whirlwinds or maybe 3 whirlwinds and a hunter if you were on a budget and desperately needed both. We didn?t see the hunter formation as much of a threat. It would be hard to suppress short of killing, but otherwise not that much an impact on the game ? I would prefer hunters spread over my other formations giving cover everywhere and bigger formations to break.

We weren?t sure about the extra two whirlwinds ? is it balanced? Now for 450 points you get a formation that can take two casualties in one go and still fire 2 templates, as well as still being air droppable.

Upgrade wise would marine players take two hunters per formation if they could? I wouldn?t, preferring to spread them out. But what about the ability to add predators as well as vindicators ? unwise? Unbalanced?

Initially we tried out an entirely mixed formation ? that is every type available. In second though it became apparent every formation would have one whirlwind and hunter in it (then predators or vindicators as required)

I personally favour a more limited change. That is the upgrades (aside from the new whirlwind one) remain the same but the formations change to the above.

My learned and wargame factory owning colleague who is more familiar with 40k than I liked it though, saying he could make up similar composition 40k armies.

Balance wise I had to admit playing several ?bity? games no problem seemed to arise. Indeed even taking the armour alongside tac or dev formations wasn?t as attractive to us as 3 razorbacks instead.

So what do you all think?
