In line with the questions about whether the current Marine list is viable operating exclusively on the ground, I pulled out my copy of IA3 for the biggest ground battle I've got a TO&E for.

On the Marine side, you have:
A BattleBarge for orbital strikes
8 Thunderhawk gunships
12
8 THawk Transports
(No fleet assets were mentioned in the story of the battle)

the entire 3rd Company of the Raptors Chapter
Captain (100)
Chaplain (50)
2 Tactical dets (600)
1 Assault det (175)
1 Devastator det (250)
2 Dreadnoughts (100)

the entire 6th Company of the Raptors Chapter
Captain (50)
Chaplain (50)
3 Tactical dets (900)
3 dreadnoughts (150)
8 Land Speeder Tornadoes (assume 2 Dets, 500)

a few scouts (10 men total, and they are not mentioned as taking part in the battle)

and a whole bunch of stuff from the Armory
4 Land Raiders (400)
4 Predator D (300)
2 Predator A (round up to a full detachment, 300)
1 Vindicator
6 Whirlwinds (round up to 2 detachments, 600)
1 Hyperios (call it a Hunter for Epic purposes, 75)
4 Lascannon Razorbacks (100)
6 Heavy Bolter Razorbacks (150)

[edit:  I also missed a Librarian.]

You're backed up by 4 Warhound Titans (1000), and Imperial Navy air support is available.

Your mission is to punch through the Tau lines, without using an Air Assault. ?All he has to do is stop you. ?(I recommend a large table for this scenario, twice the size of the standard tournament table, with the Marines advancing the length of the table.)

Tau forces available, unknown composition, but only one AX10 was present historically.

Consider the gauntlet thrown at the collective Epicomms, to see if the Marine list can be made to work in that environment.

5 Tac dets is a lot of Marines? or is it the Armor?

Hena, there was IN air support available, so let's call it 6k for ease of building armies.

I'm going to post a related thread on the Tau side, to see what they come up with to stop the Marine force.  (I'll see if I can get Dobbsy to take a swing at it, as he seems to be the Man as far as Tau are concerned.

Actually, I just found a different page.  It seems that the Raptors didn't bring their Dreads to this party, or the Vindicator.  I'm editing the initial post to reflect this.

I still intend for there to be 6k of Marines and support.

Lion,

Although the SM space assets are not specifically mentioned, I really think a Battle Barge should be factored into the list.

As big as an effort as this was, it doesn't make a lot of sense that they'd leave it out of the battle given that they were massing for a critical breakthrough in the Tau lines.

The battle from the marine perspective was entirely ground-based. The closest they got to their Thunderhawks was using Land-Speeders. :)

Exactly.  While I agree that it doesn't make any sense for the Marines to not have their Battlebarge or other Fleet assets, considering what the mission was, Forgeworld wrote the story without any mention of Astartes Fleet assets taking part in the battle.  We know they were there, but the TO&E printed on page 122 of IA3 only shows 8 THawk transports in use for that battle, and there's no mention of them being used during the fighting, just a mention of them being used for the deployment of Marine vehicles.

The story of the battle is on pages 120-121, with a little bit of an After-Action Review on page 122.

[oops, also missed that there were no Land Speeders, but I'll ignore that for the time being.]

Ah I remember that now, yes there were no Land Speeders either.

The Thunderhawk Transporters were just used to deploy the Marine Armour in-theatre behind the front line, they played no part in the breakthrough itself.

The challenge I've put to the Tau uses the Assault scenario from Fanatic 13, which can be downloaded from http://www.specialist-games.com/assets/ ... ssualt.pdf .
