I've been (very) slowly building and painting some Space Wolves with the hopes of using them as vanilla marines as well.

I've got metal command figures who could be Chaplains / Librarians / Commanders etc. and I'm wondering what are the 'Must Have' combinations that people use.

I've seen people saying that putting Chaplains with Terminators and Assault Marines is a standard thing for example. I could build optional stands later but I'd rather get it 'right first time' if anyone has advice, whether for SM or SW!

Thank you!

I've used Librarians in Terminators more and more. You lose out on the inspiring, but gain extra MW attacks on your support.

I can't think of any times when I took a Captain. Commander isn't that useful for how I run Marines. The only list I seemed to use it at all with was my drop podding Raven Guard, and then it was from the Supreme Commander and not a Captain.

Regardless though, I recommend putting a small magnet in certain bases and a pin head in the bottom of your characters. You'll have all the flexibility you need with that.

Thanks for the reply! That's a neat solution with the pin.

If you're doing Space Wolves, I'd suggest Captains and Chaplains. The Pack Mentality rule let's you combine assault from 10cm. A favorite tactic of mine is to drop pod two grey Hunter formations, one w a captain and one with a chaplain. Then retain, and use the captain to pull in the chaplain and pile on an enemy formation, ideally their BTS. It makes for a lot of 3+ CC hits in a fight!

That sounds good to me! Would you put a Wolf Priest with Skyclaws? Or any characters with Swiftclaws?

Aside from perhaps Space Wolves Captains aren’t worth it (I proposed a solution years ago tweaking the prices so Captains were 40 points and Chaplains 60 but people didn’t take it up).

I occasionally see Librarians but probably 3-4 times as many Chaplains.

Many take them but I tend not to bother with a SC for Marines as I’d rather spend the points on other things and they can get by with 1+ but it depends on your playstyle.

Not typically. I tend to run the formations pretty lean and take the character in the grey Hunter packs, and will add one to terminators.

In contrast to GlynG, I almost always take the SC. So you can see a lot of it comes down to your play style and list building preferences.

I don't take a supreme commander in 90% of my lists for any race (not counting those where one is free or mandatory) so yeah that's more of play style preference.

I don't have enough models to do all the options yet, ha ha! One day I will, I'm sure.
