As an aside, the Sabre is given a passing mention in the latest Horus Heresy novel from Black Library Know No Fear :)

The rules you've given them look solid. From a background perspective, I'd suggest a Laser Destroyer armament, like the Leman Russ Destroyer Tank Hunter, rather than the Vanquisher cannon.

This is because:
1) The relative scarcity of the weapon is explained in background terms for both Guard and Astartes.
2) It's a dedicated anti-tank weapon, rather than the more generalist Vanquisher cannon.

Yeah that's not a bad idea either. I went with vanquisher as the fluff specifically mentioned that the sabre was one of a set of rhino modifications that were made, some involving missles and lasers so I went with the ballistics tank killer. One can argue that the Whirlwind and Razorback came from this genesis in WD110.

Here's that "variation". I've taken the stats for the destroyer striaght from the EA collectors range spread sheet in the printed book and applied them
.
Rhino Sabre
Armoured Vehicle; Save 4+; Speed 25cm; CC6+; FF5+
Laser Destroyer 75cm AP5+/AT3+
Bolters (15cm) small arms
Sabres are an incredibly rare site on the battlefield harkening back to the days of the Great Crusade. No more than a single upgrade may be taken ONCE in an army (0-3 Sabre Tank Hunters).

I already use conversions based on the AT Vindicators with the Predator Annihilator rules (as Man of Kent also suggested earlier in this thread), which is probably the simplest approach and requires no rules changes.

'Count's As' works for me.

Thinking some more I realized that almost everywhere Rhino variants are 0-4. Probably should be edited as follows:

No more than a single upgrade may be taken ONCE in an army (0-4 Sabre Tank Hunters).

note: Can be used under the counts as rules as a Predator Annihilator for tournament games.

Vanquisher cannon are also rare, are dedicated anti-tank weapons per the fluff (using special armor-piercing shells), are thematically closer to an autocannon, and are actually better at killing tanks.

SK,
I totally agree. The original stats I posted are my preference (and what we've started playing with now in friendly games now that we all finally got back into playing E:A and not BFG hounds). I was digging this up as I believe, regardless of vanquisher vs laser destroyer, is that the detachment should be up to 4 units to be more in line with the existing list detachment sizes.

Taking that approach, perhaps you could just split them off into their own (0–1) detachment of 4 Sabres, rather than having them as an upgrade? That'd fit in nicely with the existing style of the army list.

Have you compared the stats with Simulated Knave's Heresy-era list, out of interest?

Interesting approach. I like it. I really feel that in a friendly play this is a limited upgrade/detachment to reflect the rarity and keep them from spamming sabre's with that nasty tank killer.

I didn't check them myself but that was because according to SK in this thread we came to the same stats independantly ;D I'll be a quick sanity check for verification. The only difference was that I added "bolters (small arms)" to the weapons but as they had the same FF value that was more flavor than anything functionaly different as back then (WD110) the Rhino still had bolters on the hatches.

edit: Heresy list 0.3 currently has the stats as
Sabre AV 25cm 4+ 6+ 5+ Vanquisher 75cm AP4+/AT2+
so we're in perfect synergy :)

I think they were the same except for the Bolters.

Independent detachment vs. upgrade depends on how you see them - I personally see Space Marine vehicles as widely distributed to support the infantry, and so find detachments of four specialist vehicles running around to be weird. Then again, detachments of four Vindicators run around together all the time...

This is a long way of saying both ways make sense. :)

Strikes me that it makes a good way of differentiating the Codex Astartes and Astartes Legion lists – Codex is small, discrete specialist elements, Legion is larger integrated formations. :)

Coming back to your original question about cost, jimmyzimms, I think 250 for a formation of four would be a good starting point. Their capabilities are broadly equivalent to a Predator Annihilator (which have shorter range and slightly worse – but more plentiful – weaponry). To indicate their rarity, you could simply remove the upgrade options, making them slightly less desirable in relation to Annihilators.

This also removes the option of the Hyperios Hunter, which synergises significantly better with them than other marine formations (owing to the similar AT role and range).

Perhaps this should be "upgrade 1 Hunter to Relic Sabre Tank Killer " in a codex style list?
