Post subject:  Best rules source?

Hi guys

I hope this is the right forum for this.

As a fairly new chap on the Epic scene, I'm finding a lot of this discussion over the finer points of rules quite confusing.  I can't afford to have lots of options for my army lists and I definetly can't afford the time to be constantly churning out new units according to which stats and rulesets are currently en vogue.

Is there one list/PDF/rules group that the majority of players stick to?  This is just club play, I understand that torunament organisers can obviously dictate their own specific lists, but as I intend to become a bit of a regular at the Cock in Euston (nice chaps, good location) who should I listen to for the rules?

I sort of want to stick to the E:A book as it's all contained and at some point was considered official, but I'm currently building a Dark Angels army and all this discussion over Land Raiders has really confused me in what I should put in my list.  Are they 100pts? 75pts? What is there firefight value?

I realise it is very likely I will get different opinions, but any hints on what source I should listen to, and if so, where I can find it?

Thanks

Play with the published rules on the GW website and you can't go wrong.
Alternatively if you used the Epic UK rules no one would be concerned.

As to the rest its optional. I normally played with the online changes in the rules forum (its an A4 sheet covering all the published Epic armies). Certainly most of the players in London do if they aren't practising for a tourney.

Soon I think there will be a few tweaks to the core rules as well.

But certainly as long as everything comes from the same source - the published stuff ont he GW site, the Epic UK site or the rules forum here its fine. Its all balanced, just in different ways and there is nothing stopping different armies from each playing each other! (Edit, in some cases we are talking making a difference of +/-50 points to the average army.) Just know what you have, where its from and what its stats are (and tell the opponent before hand!)

The playtest lists here are just that - playtests. This is actually the playtesting space marine section of the site, though it tend to get used for other marine related stuff as well.

So for instance there is a list at the top of the sud forum detailing all the chapter lists people have thought up. If you want to play one, go ahead, nowt will happen to you. Note how the battle goes and anything which is too good/bad and your thoughts on whether or not it delivers and report back.

I suggest you start with Salamanders :) , though not against Rug or Ginger as they I suspect must be sick of them by now :)

This is the Poll that was/is being conducted on which rules people are using.

http://www.tacticalwargames.net/forums/ ... 69;t=15563

The official rules are GW rules pdf and GW errata pdf on their website (they have been combined but it's taking time to get it up on the GW website). That essentially means most of the army lists are unofficial.

People also use the Net EA tournament mods pdf that is on here somewhere (to modify the official lists).

Thanks folks, especially Chris with all those lovely links.

I saw E&C mention some sort of handbook was being made with all the online Epic communities army lists and erratas, is there any substance to that does anyone know?

Also TRC, am I to gather from a few comments you've moved to pastures new?  Should have played you whilst I had the chance!

I'll be back! Even if it kills me (or more likely I die a horrible tropical death then get shipped back). Currently I'm heating up my heels in Kolkata, though should be returning to the UK for a job with either the MoD or DFID in either London or East Kilbride at some point.

Crikey, how did you end up over there?  More MoD type stuff.

My bro works closely with them in his PhD, wonder if he'll end up getting shipped off!

Aye, the ERC is currently working on an army book that will contain all of the 'game ready' armies that they've put together over the past few years. When released that'll be my default gaming document.

EpicUK are Matt Otter (Braveheart on the forums) and his gaming group, who have started making their own army lists; If you want to attend tournaments in the UK, most of them use their army lists, as most UK tournaments are to a greater or lesser extent organised by Matt Otter.

Of all the answers you could have given me, I think that was the least expected!
