EA Handbook 2008 and Scions 1.3 list. 3K Battle.

Scions Of Iron
Tac A - 4 tacticals, 2 rhino, 2 predator annihilators
Tac B - 4 tacticals, 2 rhino, 2 predator annihilators
Terminator - 4 termis including chaplain, 2 crusaders, 1 hunter
Helios - 4 Helios including SC
Landraiders - 4 Landraiders
Predators - 4 preds, 1 hunter
Bikes - 4 Bikes
THawk SB, - Saturation bombing Thawk


Steel Legion

Regimental HQ, fire support, ogryns, chimeras, hydra
Infantry company, fire support, ogryns, hydra

Setup

As below. Rules for the scenery were that the fields did not block LOS if target or firer were on a hill.  Otherwise the fields blocked LOS for all units. The town sectors (>1 building), did block LOS.  

Guard garrisoned their two infantry companies on overwatch. One near their blitz (o1), one near objective 2 (o2).

Turn 1

Scions win SR.

-Helios bombard infantry company1, killing 2.
-Landraiders drive behind middle town to get behind cover.
-Leman Russ double to crest hill, kill predator and rhino from TacA.
-Bombards shoot Landraiders placing BM.
-Thawk bombs inf company1 killing 2.
-Predators drive up to join Landraiders.
-Shadowswords march foward.
-Bikes move to center.
-Reg HQ doubles to hill and shoots predators only placing a BM.
-Termis double and shoot HQ placing a BM.
-Inf2 doubles and shoots termis doing nothing.
-TacB doubles and shoots HQ killing ogryn and inf.
-TacA doubles to behind the Helios.

End positions as below.


Everything rallies.

Turn 2

Marines win SR.

-Landraiders move and shoot killing 2 chimeras and inf and getting into FF support.
-Terminators assault HQ (and Inf2 not intermingled despite what it appears in pic cos of hill slope). Inf1 overwatch fires as termis engage (4 shots) only placing a BM. Before...


And after...
Casualties are very heavy, and more so when the supporting fire happens... HQ breaks and retreats over the hill. Terminators though winning the combat, break due to casualties and retreat towards their blitz (crusader and chaplain squad survive).


-Infantry company 2 then engages the nearby TacB formation on the hill and kills all but 2 preds for the loss of an ogryn. The preds of TacB retreat to the large buildings behind them.
-Predators double and shoot bombards killing 1 and breaking them. Bombards retreat towards the hill and town.
-Shadowswords move onto road and destroy 2 Landraiders.
-THawk bombs HQ in open killing 3 more units.
-Leman Russ double and kill 2 Helios including SC :(
-TacA move and fire placing BM on Russ.
-Helios move and fire killing a Russ.



Rallies - Russ fail, Bombards fail, HQ fails.  The 2 TacB preds  fail to rally.

Turn 3

Marines win SR.

-Helios sustain on Russ killing hydra.
-TacA engages Russ, but are wiped out having done nothing.
-Inf2 engages and wipes out Landraiders
-Inf1 sustains on Preds killing two (SC reroll used).
-Bikes engage Leman Russ and win for loss of 1 bike. Russ now down to 6 strong retreat to hill.
-Preds double to Guard blitz, and kill another bombard.
-Shadowswords double and kill a Helios. Remaining Helios retreats.
-Thawk hits HQ again, HQ down to 3 units but SC lives.
-Terminator and crusader move and fire doing BM to  Shadowsword and getting in engage range.

Russ fail to rally, HQ fails to rally, bombard fails to rally.
TacB preds fail to rally again.

Turn 4

-Helios shoot Shadowswords doing a DC.
-Termis engage Shadowswords doing a point of damage, but are wiped out...
-Inf1 shoots Preds killing hunter and pred. Remaining pred retreats.
-Shadowswords kill last Helios.
-Bikes engage shadowswords blowing up a Shadowsword, but are wiped out.
-Inf2 doubles to take marine blitz, while spreading out to maintain take and hold capture.
-Thawk bombs Inf2 killing 4.

Game over. 4-0 to guard... All I have left of the Scions is 3 broken predators and a damaged Thawk...

Conclusion

What a beating... obviously I still have a lot of learning still  to do... :)

My impression from this battle?
Hena, you know this question of yours:

1. Scouts vs Scout Bikes. I removed Scouts from the list mainly as Bikes would fit better to theme. However this leaves only Terminators to be "infantry" formation. And the Tacticals, but they are hybrid. Is this workable, I hope it would be?

IIRC I originally supported the scout bikes over scouts... but... can we please have some normal scouts back! :D Even if you add them in addition to the scout bikes. Could be on the basis that having exceptionally good recon would be very important to expensive and vulnerable armoured units. Bikes are good recon for some terrain, but not typically the terrain you'll need them in I think.

I thought your right flank was to weak and that perhaps you should have put the LRs on each flack and your softer stuff in the middle.

Also - What right flank? That implies I had a right flank rather than just a gaping hole... :D

A way to stop onrushing massed heavy tanks and infantry would be nice to know... like Mike said I needed to get out of the way of most of it and smack one bit over at a time in clever elite marine fashion, but his guard sure came on fast...

Certainly Charad seems to be think that Scout Bikes is not the way to go :).

I'd agree with this proposal.  Another point in its favour is that there are no specific scout bike models, so it is one of those fiddly things that would have to be proxied, and it is probably not easily distinguished by opponents even if it is done.
