I guess that I'm arguing that we don't need all of these variant lists, and that if you really want to be different for vanilla marines then we should offer a tweaked list to represent them. Besides, the only chapter that really needs a variant list is the Space Wolves, as they are messed up in comparison to Smurfs. DA and BA are just to darn similar to be worth all of the trouble that were going through to produce this.

It's not just aboutnew units. It's representing a specific style of warfare a given chapter utilises. Ans this specific style is shown in the altered army list layout. Not just new units.

Its all optional :)

Stick with the codex list and concentrate on playtesting Space Wolves, there is no requirement to do everything (if you follow where I post you will see there are a bunch of armies I don't comment on, largely because I'm either ignorant about their 40k background or useless with that type of force!).

Personally I like variant marine lists, I find them fun, relatively simply and engaging (well, I still fail to get my head round raven guard as I know zero about the chapter). They are also I find a lot easier to do than variant guard, which is my other main interest (well along with Titans).

On Plasma Pred, there are a lot of names you could go for.

Decimator, Devastator, Apocalypse, Armageddon, Demolisher, Executor, Tenderiser, Sublimator (It turns stuff straight from a solid to a gas, maybe a bit too clever).

I've also thought about giving formations special abilities. There is concern over formations having lots of a particular ability (Leader RW, Fearless DW, etc). Can a formation be given an ability so RW could count as having a single Leader ability or be allowed to always garrison without a majority of scout abilities.

DW could have semi-fearless, they reduce the additional damage from losing an assault by 1 and reduce the additional hits caused by BM when broken by 1.

Something may be workable to give DW and RW formations rather than units a relevant ability that isn't as strong as giving all the units the ability.

Also, Master of the Ravenwing Landspeeder. RW Tornado with Twin AC, Twin HB, 3+ save, Leader and Commander as an upgrade to a single RW Tornado. It is a unique bit of kit. (The jetbike isn't distinctive at the epic level but the Landspeeder could be)

Ok, I've had a quick look.

Vastly Improved Landspeeder - No but I still think the Master of the Ravenwings Land Speeder is a good idea.

Ironwing Dreads - I can't see them being a major problem separate. If it was a problem I think it would already have shown up in standard SM as they can take 2 Dreads and a Hunter for 25pts more. The Mortis isn't that good.

Deathwing Land Raiders - Maybe a little cheap as an Upgrade at 300pts for 4, 350pts?

Ravenwing - Nit-picking but I don't like 16 marine formations with no option for a full 20.

Ravenwing as a whole - I thought the Teleport homer was being considered for removal as it's impact is minimal.

Snipers - Change to all marines or just something different here.

Ok with BL's approval I've shifted the pdf to a new thread, this one can hang around to be a place where people can if they wish discuss DA tactics, list feel etc without getting into the nitty gritty of the list.

List thread is here
