Oh, I quite agree. In order to balance a list, some standard must be set and the 2700/3000 point in a list is what a majority of people play and that is what the list should be tuned to.
However, as you get up in points 4K, 5K, etc (even played a 11K/side game once), the dynamics of a list change considerable, especially if you increase the playing area. Then units that were so terrible at 2.7K/3K tend to not be so incredibly terrible and with more resources available, individual mistakes tend to be less unforgiving.
Also, we were not really discussing balance, it had more to do with whether or not a particular configuration of units added value.

I don't think playing at larger point games means you throw out the list and just do whatever you want. Lists are scalable and in fact some (i.e. SM) adopt a completely different character when played at higher points.
