Hey all... with vangaurd releasing some nice Cron proxies these days including some spiders and scarabs i wonder why these never made it in a list except for the attack profile of a spider? I could imagine them as cheap upgrades to core Phalanxes (like max 3 bases) with a very simple statline and expandable as a rule... to roadblock assaultunits (who are something of a problem to most nec units)
What is everyone else thinking about it?

They've been weapons for a looong time, even the 3.2 list from the Fanatic archive (circa 2006ish) had them that way. Corey put some thoughts on why in the Raiders unit design notes:

Quote:
Scarabs were converted to a weapon system for units that can
“produce” them for two reasons. One, it was simply easier to
handle them, then to try to handle “Spawning”, come up with
costs, or play with a unit that you would have to have in
unmanageable numbers to be effective. Secondly, it reduces the
amount of models that would have to be made for the list, and I
personally would really hate to have to base figures the size of
the head of a pin…

Not the most compelling of reasons, but there you go.

Maybe just move the weapon stats into a Character unit, and give the Warrior formation an option of purchasing 3 of them for 25-50 points? That way you're not giving Warrior formations a bump against shooting or cheap extra stands for assault resolution, which making them their own expendable unit would do.

Yeah but why not havong them function as a Unit... like in an upgrade only warriors can have... 3 bases 30 points eacht armour 6+ ff- cc5+ and expandable... that would make warriors a bit more resilent against assaults and the models usable besides fillers and basedecorations...

You can do whatever you want, but like I said in the last sentence above it's also going to give them a bump against being shot at as well as all assaults they're in (attacker or defender) due to the extra stands. Neither is needed in my opinion. From the 10+ years of games I've had against them I don't agree that assaults are "something of a problem for Necrons". They excel at them (high armor, high FF, good support always nearby, ease of engaging without BMs), clipping assaults in particular.

Better not to bother making them a unit at Epic scale I think. Tyranid Ripper Swarms aren't in the tyranid list and Snotlings aren't units in the ork list. It's not worth the bother for such a small minor unit.

If you want to use a base of Scarabs just use them in game as a Warrior unit.
