When you play against Necrons, what do you think is the worst part with facing them? The two big candidates I can see is Living Metal (NetEA version) and assaulting out of a portal, winning a clipping engagement, and then disappearing back into another portal (Portal-Engage-Portal). Which one's the worst offender?

Or do you have a better candidate?

The thing that bugs me the most is that they're such a one trick pony. Has any group had success with without using clipping assaults?

I agree with Dave. Played twice and never seen again.

Really? (Using the EUK list) I have a full Phalanx with Immortals, Pariah, Tomb Spyders & Wraiths. These guys will go toe to toe with any formations (and at 675pts so they should).

Yes the list becomes very much can I get the big assault in or not but that is one of the challenges of the game. I more find the poor SR means that I very rarely get to try and dictate the game as everything just runs away from me.

my annoyance is partially with the portal tactic, but also the fact that portals are still just as effective when the formation is broken, my last game against necrons consisted of me setting almost all my formations on overwatch while the necron player kept his portals out of LOS, on turn 3 I tried to reposition a formation which meant the necrons were able to get in amongst my army, then zip around portal-to-portal for lots of mutually supportive engagements

it remains the only game of epic to date that I have not enjoyed

In my experience, excessive overwatch leads to a boring game and a lost game. It's not the only way to beat the necrons.

On them being a one-trick pony, I tentatively agree. I've played the Tomb World list a couple of times, without any double-Monolith formations (as I'm thinking of removing that from the list), and I haven't had much success. Will need to play more though.

I felt that with the 'self-prep' ability of the monoliths to move forward, shoot and prep, then retain and engage out of the portals with blast marker free units, having some ability to lay blast markers through overwatch was my only chance (being a guard player and therefore vulnerable to clipping assaults on large unwieldy formations didn't help overly much either)

I had no artillery which meant he could afford to sit out of LOS, and he teleported pylons onto both of my objectives which meant they were a warhound-free zone for much of the game....

Some overwatch can be very good, but nearly the entire army?

Pylons are also extremely easy to break.

Broken Monoliths can't prep the engagment (which has been my problem), but I understand where you are coming from.

The big thing that I hoped Necrons would bring to the game would be the proper use of scouts. These are used to push the monoliths back and stop the prepping.

with most of my protective "necron-flak" shooting formations overwatching, I couldn't do much with my other units without leaving their protective mutually supportive formations so I just stuck them on overwatch too, the game proved that the necrons only need a small opening and then they can get right inside your army....

yeah they are, but his were well hidden behind cover so I had to expose my units if I wanted to get to them...

I'm sure next time I'll have a better experience, during this game I was quite ill and hadn't eaten anything all day so wasn't my usual cheerful self.... ;)

I just had no idea what to do against them, I've taken some severe kickings in my time, but I always felt there was something I could do that wouldn't get me into even deeper trouble, this was different, I just felt that whatever I did was wrong, hence the overwatch castle.....

take artillery next time? I'm not sure you can really complain they're annoying by refusing to stay in just the right place to be shot at.

Post subject:  Re: Annoying little Necrons

the annoyance came from the portals IMO, engaging out of one FM then consolidating halfway across the table out of a different portal to support a different assault is incredibly powerful and difficult to 'keep a lid on'

more fool me for not sticking to standard 'must take arty' rules.... I never leave home without it these days although I don't like the fact that it's almost essential for guard.....
