Well, I'm gonna put my Monoliths where my mouth is!

Getting in a game this evening, and, even though it's not done and there's lots of proxies, I'm bringing a "popcorn" Monolith list.  I'll post the army lists now, before the game, hope I can get the report done tonight.

My opponent is using the same Eldar army he used last time, due to our "Play it til it loses!" observance.

I don't think he's going to be happy... *LAUGH*

*Whew* ?What a game! ?Don't think I'll get the full batrep up tonight... gotta de-brief!

Here's the initial deployment and I'll try to get the initial teleport shot up as well.

Battlefield:

4x6
Biel-Tan chose corner deployment.

Deployment:

Biel-Tan kept Aspect Warhost 1 ?in the Webway.

Necron kept all formations in reserve.

No garrisons.

Remaining (Eldar) deployment as shown:  No formations are intermingled and zones of control cover almost the entire deployment zone.

Turn 1

*LOTS* of teleports!

The Pylons arrive, safely, in cover, near various objectives...

And then the Monoliths pour in!

Monolith 1 plugs the Wraithgate with its Obelisk.

Monoliths 2 through 9 show up forming a chaing of zones of control around the right "leg" of the Biel-Tan deployment.  Monoliths 3, 4, and 5 each suffer a Blast marker while Monolith 7 breaks on arrival.

Let the fun begin!

And an "overhead" shot:

Turn 1 (Continued)

Strategy roll: Biel-Tan

The Farseers see death staring them in the face and choose a risky gambit from the threads of Fate? the Windriders engage Monolith 8, though this allows for support from Monolith 9 and places a single Jetbike in range of Monolith 6, but with the support of both Guardian Warhosts?

The Eldar take out the Obelisk, losing 2 Bikes in the process? and then the support fire? Monolith 6 has no targets anymore, and Monolith 9 can only target the two Vypers, taking one out? but the Eldar support fire annihilates the lone Monolith, breaking Monolith 9 and placing a Blast marker on Monolith 6.

Aspect Warhost 2 then engages Monolith 5, manoeuvring to allow at least a little support fire from all the other non-broken Monoliths nearby.

Monolith 5 gets its full eight attacks? hits times? and all are saved? the Eldar fight back and take out both Necron death machines? also breaking Monoliths 3, 4 and 6, and placing a Blast marker on Monolith 2.  The broken Monoliths move away from the Eldar thinking "Better luck next time!"

Swords of Vaul 2 advances on Monolith 2, trashes the Obelisk and breaks this formation as well.

In a fit of mechanical pique, Pylon sustains fire on the Revenants? and eliminates one of the graceful Titans!  The survivor, sobbing like a baby, moves out of line of sight of the other Pylon. (WOOHOO!)

Phalanx 2 engages Aspect Warhost 2 by emerging from the Portal of broken Monolith 2.  It's a brutal fight, the Necrons lose both Wraiths, the Tomb Spyder and two Warriors, but they also manage to scythe down all the Eldar except a Dire Avenger Exarch and the single Wave Serpent he flees in!

Seeking revenge, Aspect Warhost 1 emerges from the Wraithgate to engage Monolith 1!  Two Shining Spears each tag the Monolith and Obelisk, while one of the Swooping Hawks moves to get the broken Phalanx 2 into support range.

The Aspect Warriors lose a single Shining Spear, wiping out the Necron menace to the Webway and causing another Warrior of Phalanx 2 to fade away.

Swords of Vaul 1 has a hard time deciding what to do, but the Autarch orders them to double against Monolith 6? and they take out the enemy formation.

Phalanx 3 emerges from broken Monolith 3 to engage Aspect Warhost 1.  Three Warriors go down, but only the Autarch survives to flee the Harvest!

Phalanx 4 engages Guardian Warhost 2 by exiting the Portal of Monolith 9? the Farseer and 1 Guardian are killed, but the tenacious Eldar fight back taking out 3 Warriors? and the Pariah!  The rest of the Necrons fade away as the Eldar win overwhelmingly in resolution.  *SIGH*

The Shields of Vaul advance on Monolith 7? and take it out.

Phalanx 1 makes an appearance to engage Sword of Vaul 1, losing a single Warrior and wiping out the Fire Prisms and Firestorm!

Guardian Warhost 1 fires on Monolith 4? and takes it out.

Pylon 2 goes on overwatch.

Guardian Warhost 2 marshals and clears all Blast markers?

End of Turn:

Broken Necron formations fade away? but all successfully rally in the "afterlife".

The Autarch fails to compose himself and sits in a sulk on his Jetbike?

Turn 2

Not quite as many teleports? *laugh*

The Avatar appears between the two Guardian Warhosts.

Monolith 2 appears in a small gap in zones of control near the Eldar Blitz, Monolith 3 appears near the Revenants and Monolith 9 appears with all of Phalanx 1 withing 15cm?  :D

Strategy roll: Biel-Tan

The Revenant sustains fire on Monolith 3, shattering an Obelisk... but the Monolith abides!

Bellowing with rage, the Avatar engages Monolith 2, with the full support of Guardian Warhosts 1 and 2, the Windriders, the Revenant, and the tiny fragment of Aspect Warhost 2.  The Avatar wiffs on all his attacks? the Monolith scores three hits? the Avatar fails two saves? and takes a crit!  NOOOooo?!  *LAUGH*  All the Eldar take Blast markers, breaking Aspect 2 in the process? fortunately, the nearby broken Autarch is just out of line of sight of the fallen Avatar, so, for now, he sticks around?

Fearing for their lives, Guardian Warhost 1 sustains fire on Monolith 2? and only manages to break it? it too abides.

Phalanx 1 vanishes while Monolith 9 glows a sickly green? and then emerge from Monolith 3 to engage the intermingled Revenants and Windriders? with the broken Autarch "in support".

The Necron lose their Pariah, an Immortal, and 3 Warriors, but wipe the Eldar out, causing the Autarch to jump off his Jetbike and hide too, though the Necrons are broken.

Monolith 9 then engages Sword of Vaul 2 and somehow manages to get itself wrecked without inflicting any damage at all!

The Shields of Vaul sustain fire on the broken Phalanx 1 and vengefully wipe it out.

Swords of Vaul 2 advance on Phalanx 3 and take out the Pariah and 1 Warrior, breaking the metal menace.

Pylon 1 goes on overwatch.

Guardian Warhost 2 sustains fire on Monolith 3? and takes it out!

Phalanx 2 marshals out of the Tomb Complex and restores itself to full functions? sans Pariah?

Pylon 2 stays on overwatch?

End of Turn:

Broken Necron formations fade away? but Phalanx 4 fails to rally!

All remaining Eldar formations rally.

Turn 3

A single teleport as Monolith 2 shows up near the Eldar Blitz

Strategy roll: Biel-Tan

The Shields of Vaul advance on Monolith 2, breaking it.

Guardian Warhost 2 sustains fire on Monolith 2? to no effect.

Guardian Warhost 1 engages Monolith 2, putting the already dead Wraithguard up front.  They lose two of the constructs, but the massed fire of the Warhost finally takes out the last Monolith? BOOOOOOO!

Pylon 2 reactivates its overwatch.

The tiny fragment of Aspect Warhost 2 marches cover to cover to guard the Wraithgate, staying out of line of sight of any Pylons.

Pylon 1 reaffirms its overwatch status.

In a gutsy move, Sword of Vaul 2 doubles to fire on Pylon 2? the Pylon's overwatch shot misses, as to the Swords of Vaul, who spread out to claim contest both Necron forward objectives.

Phalanx 2 doubles towards Swords of Vaul 2, but cant get it range to shoot?

End of Turn:

All forces rally.

Biel-Tan 0 (none) vs Necrons 1 (BTS)

Turn 4

Not a single teleport!

Strategy roll: Biel-Tan

Swords of Vaul 2 sustain fire on Pylon 2, doing 1DC damage and breaking it.

Pylon 1 stays on overwatch.

The Shields of Vaul march to secure Necron Objective 1.

Phalanx 2 engages Swords of Vaul 2 and wipes them out without suffering a casualty.

Itsy-bitsy Aspect Warhost 2 doubles to fire on Pylon 2, to no effect.

Phalanx 4 marshals out of the Tomb Complex and repairs 3 Warriors.

Guardian Warhost 1 advances to reposition.

Guardian Warhost 2 starts guarding the Blitz by going on overwatch?

End of Turn:

Pylon 2 fails to rally.

Biel-Tan 0 (none) vs Necrons 1 (BTS)

Tie-breaker

Biel-Tan: 1975 vs Necron: 2075 - Vaporously narrow Necron "win".

Very interesting!

Looks like the new rallying rules & strategy rating (Four Biel-Tan strategy wins in a row) affected the game, providing a closer result than would have happened under previously versions of the list.

I would say that I would have isolated each end of the Eldar line with the turn 1 teleports rather than forming a line across the front of him.

Interesting game.  The popcorn army didn't do nearly as well as folks might have thought, although other games are in order I am sure.  This shouldn't be a problem with your play it till it loses policy. :)

It seems like the Necrons were able to rally with very few issues.  Out of close to ten rallies I see only one that failed it's roll (and it was a phalanx not a Monolith).  How do you think this affected the game?

It appears the Eldar mobility was a key factor in this battle.  Would you agree?  How do you think a less mobile force would have done?

Well, I hope to try it out against some of the other "core" armies... but we'll see if my opponents are up for it!  *laugh*

Actually, it makes the game very tense for the Necron player, at least it made *me* tense... it's the potential that nothing off board will return, a 1-in-3 chance.  I just got lucky is all.  If I had failed any of the Monoliths in Turn 1, I think the Eldar would've swept.
It appears the Eldar mobility was a key factor in this battle. ?Would you agree? ?How do you think a less mobile force would have done?
Actually, it was the "triple activation" that was brutal... combined with Hit and Run... the Eldar player could just attempt to "roll-up" the Necrons... and all that sneaky "one unit in support range" stuff to spread Blast markers around is just dang pointy-eared!  *laugh*

Of course, my opponent got essentially no use out of the Revenants... 650 points of non-contribution is a big handicap!  *laugh*

Was a much more fun and tense game than expected!
