Lets say that after a round of shooting, a formation of Destroyers phases has 2 casualties, and accumulates 4 blast markers, enough to break the unit and phase them out.

On the following turn, I can bring the 4 remaining Destroyers back in through a portal.  The question is, if I marshall, how many Destroyers can I bring back?

I'd assume one (i.e. half of the missing units), but I'm not sure.  You can also rally even if you have no blast markers, to restore units, correct?

Yes, you may marshall regardless of whether you have BMs.  While not without contraversy, you simply create a value of how many BMs you would have been able to remove, then add that many Necron units back on.

As for the example you provided... You are correct.
Breakdown: Four Destroyers are broken and off the table at the end of turn 1.  Since the Necron automatically rally, turn 2 has the four destroyers as automatically rallied and sitting off board, ready to come back on by whatever means.  During their activation, they can marshall remove half of two = 1 Destroyer.  Of course, this means that they have to use the move in their marshall and that precludes them from attacking or assaulting, and this also assumes they have a portal to get on the board with.

The way I see it, when they automatically rally, they automatically recover half of their dead (In the same manner as a broken formation removes half of its blast markers).

Then when marshalling, the formation may recover 2D6 (Picking the highest)'s worth of dead.

Ie: I think Moscovian had it wrong.

I do have it wrong - UGH.  I was confusing my rallying mechanic with the marshalling mechanic.

Aha!

In my original example then, I would phase out the four destroyers for being broken, and when they automatically rally, I'll add one destroyer back.

When they come on the board the following turn, there will be five destroyers to bring onto the table.

If I choose to marshall for some silly reason, I'll get to retrieve the highest of 2D6 more models back (in this case, a maximum of one more destroyer, since that's the max size of the squad).

Hena, I'm not quite sure what you mean.  Could you clarify, please?

When Necrons that are "phased out" remove their Blast markers/regroup, they aren't allowed to add back any units to the formation, they just clear all their Blast markers.

So in your opinion, the following statement from Evil and Chaos is incorrect?

The way I see it, when they automatically rally, they automatically recover half of their dead (In the same manner as a broken formation removes half of its blast markers)

This should really be cleaned up or explicitly stated in the rules, it is quite confusing. ?

My opponent didn't even think it was possible for a Necron unit to attempt to Marshall without blast markers.

a Broken Necron formation does NOT regain any destroyed units automatically when it phases out.

If I'm not very much mistaken, I believe I put in the "we'll be back rule" that it only works for formations on the board.

A unit of Destroyers which loses 2, and breaks will phase out, remove all blast markers, and be left with 4 active Destroyers.

On the following turn, if there is an active portal, they may marshall, but only if they move ONTO the board, denying them any fire.  They then follow rules for Marshalling.

Once they are on the board, they will NOT be able to restore any units unless they either (a.) Take a Marshall Action on a future turn, or (b.) they recieve blast markers, and may make a Rally Check at the end of the turn as normal.

Why can't formations without BM's take a rally check and recover half of their missing?

Having a stipulation that they can't is counter-intuitive.

Why would you count units as "effective" BMs only when the formation is down units?  That's counter-intuitive as well.

2 units down, 0 BMs = 2 "effective" BMs

So why not...

2 units down, 3 BMs = 5 "effective" BMs

===

The entire system is flat out funky and I've pointed it out before.  Anything that gets a bonus from having BMs and/or from being broken is against the spirit of the game.
