Fabulous work all the way around.  I am almost wishing I was back in an engineering program with access to all those nifty toys...  almost.

I second Ragnorok's idea of using the top portion as an Obelisk.  I think if you fill in the portions where the turret is supposed to fit in the Monolith that it will be just about perfect.  I'd make a separate sprue with 3-4 of them rather than add the to the Obelisk sprue, though.

Well, if you can "do" this ... you can do other, Necron Vehicles !?  Yes ? :D

Lots and lots of replies again, thanks guys :)

First: There are no news about the smaller sprue yet. Just didn't get it... I may be able to take some pictures of a "printed" one tomorrow though.

Second: I won't be using the Monolith's top as an Obelisk. I'd have quoted a pm I sent to Moscovian, but as they don't seem to get stored (gnargh!?), I'll just try and repeat the gist of it: I don't think that square base would work well, design-wise, in a Necron army. The Necrons seem to be, at least that's my interpretation, very much some kind of Sci-Fi Egyptian undead army, with references to the ancient Egypt all over the place. Now, while the Monolith really works well with that (as it looks like a mixture of a small pyramid and a fat obelisk), a square plane with a diamond simply has no real connection to the Egyptian theme of the army. Now, my solution will probably be rather simple: By making the "base" of the Obelisk hexagon-shaped, the whole would look like the outline of a diamond, which would hopefully fit better, as it could, in that Egyptian context, be interpreted as an image of a Pharaoh's riches. Also, as there are diamonds on top of the bigger vehicles, it would repeat that existing image in a slightly larger scale, once again making it (hopefully) fit better into the army.

So: The plan is of course to have a little more diversity than just a Monolith... But I'll do it my way ;).

Anyway, got to go, more things will come later on. Thanks again for all your support and kind words.

Though my knowlege is only moderate, I don't recall the hexagon as being particularly associated with Egyptian architecture or art... everything I've seen tends to indicate 90 degree angles on the horizontal, with either vertical or slightly angled verticals. A pyramid will have a shallower angle from the ground plane when viewed from afar of course (Some pyramids approaching 45 degrees), but it is of course composed of many 90 degree angles.

What in particular makes the hexagon represent Pharaoh's riches?

How about the Obelisks shown in the PC-Game Dawn of War: Dark Crusade?

Do you have a screen capture from the game?  I'm curious what they look like.

Fantastic work there Snotgun! I'd love a few myself. I hate to be the voice of reason here though guys, but I doubt it's legal for SG to cast GW IP and sell it. I'd look into it before you do anything like that SG.

Not the Obelisk from DoW:DC but interesting nonetheless:

Snotgun:  I think most people are just going by the concept sketches in Corey's army list.  The "base" of the obelisk is a square piece and the "obelisk" itself is the crystal.

Not that you should feel restricted to that.  It's just FYI.

If you shorten every 2nd edge, the shape resembles the outline of a diamond. Also, it looks more dynamic that way ;)

I hate to be the voice of reason here though guys, but I doubt it's legal for SG to cast GW IP and sell it. I'd look into it before you do anything like that SG. Is SG me or is SG Specialist Games? If it's me: I never said I'd be selling this stuff big scale. I certainly won't do anything that'd make GW think they should sue me...

@ Black Legion: Are those the Obelisks we are talking about? Fast tanks etc.? They seem to be more some kind of buildings... o_O

In other news, I just picked up the Epic scale "print" of the Monolith... And it was a mess. Completely useless. However, I tend to blame the stupid idea of adding a sprue to the model, I'll try again with the single parts only, maybe that turns out to be better. You won't believe how glad I am to have free access to that machine instead of having to pay each mm? of material *phew*.

Small update:

The end of the term is nearly there, with me having to go back to Germany soon... Now, I have asked for one last print, fixing some errors of the last Monolith print (damn me) and a first version of the Obelisk, which I hope to be finished before I leave.

As I had some uni-work to finish, I couldn't really do all I intended to do (ie no Pylon, not to even speak about those fancy war engines) - including getting feedback on this Obelisk-idea. I have already looked for a 3D printer back home though, so work should continue even back on the continent.

However, I would of course love to get some feedback on that Obelisk. It seems to be a little large (comparing its base's width to that of a Monolith), but I hope it doesn't seem to be that big on the field as it is only one third as high. It is (obviously) not as detailed as the Monolith which is mainly due to the loss of detail that occurs during the printing process: Spending more time on something that will be lost later on just doesn't make sense. Anyway, as the Obelisk still isn't all too weak I wouldn't want to make it too small - it still should scare any Necron opponent right back to Terra to see some formations of them ;).
