Yes, you can add the lord to any unit in the formation, but note that, for example, adding it to a pariah might be a bad idea because it doesn't have the "necron" rule. Adding them to Immortals is a good idea, and often makes immortals worth taking.

As for Chaos, note that I believe the Black Legion list has a specific exception in the list, only allowing characters to be added to the initial units in the formation.

Had I understood that I'd have put the lord in my immortal stand too, if anything just because it makes him stand out better and looks cool to have an immortal bodyguard.... might need to do that with the extra immortals and lords I have.

I'm not sure that's correct, I'm remembering a discussion about this once. The Lord comes with the stock units (just like the Chaos Lord in the Retinue) and I think he has to be added to one of those, and cannot be added to a unit that was part of an upgrade.

The chaos list has a special note to that effect, the necron list doens't, and Corey indicated on several occasions that it was allowed.

Well, I think, since the chaos list has a special paragraph saying that lords can only be added to the core formation and not the upgrades, then probably for other armies they can be added to the upgrades. At least that's how I interpret it after reading the chaos rules. So thanks for all your answers guys I'll be adding my lords to immortal units.

Only because we made it that way. Had it been an upgrade we could have avoided this confusion about where it can be added to.

It just seems silly, that's all. Wish I had noticed it before the re-print.

It's a design thing I guess. The designers of the list thought that the Lord should be mandatory for the infantry phalanx formation and not an option.

Any upgrades to the the formation are a part of it, the immortals or pariahs don't make a new formation. So the way I see it after having followed the above
discussion is that the Lord can be added to any unit in the formation. And there is no rule in the Necron list that says the Lord has to be added to the core
units of the infantry phalanx formation such as the army specific rule in the chaos list.

Yeah and the Lord would be an armored vehicle unit in an otherwise all infantry formation so would be quite to vulnerable to AT fire.
