Just looking at 4.3r

What units can a Necron Lord be added to?

It looks like it's supposed to be just warriors in the phalanx? (But why not the immortals then?)

In the Venator and Eques it looks like they can join any formation? But technically they shouldn't be able to join Tomb Spiders or Wraiths - right?

I don't see anything wrong with them joining wraiths. The only odd thing about them joining tomb spyders is that they gain an extra CC attack. Since leader doesn't stack on the same base. 'Wraith Lords' are actually a pretty common conversion in my experience. Usually done with a combination of a few pieces of wargear for the lord.

As far as I understand it, they should be able to placed in any unit in the formation, just like a marine commander can be put in a rhino or a dreadnought (Though no one does) or an IG commissar can go in a Leman Russ.

a Necron Lord is MANDATORY for warriors, which is why one is included in the base unit.

As for the other formations, from my understanding of the rules, add ons MUST be placed on a basic unit of the formation, and never on any of the other add ons.  That would mean that for Destroyers, you'd have to have a Destroyer Lord, and for in a Venator formation, they would have to be with the Flayed Ones.

You can't put a Lord on a Spyder.  They aren't actual vehicles for one to fit in.

I think you assume a convention in the standard rules that simply doesn't exist.

For example, Ogryn Commissars are perfectly legal for IG.

The "Chaos Space Marine Lords" are also only allowed to be put in the "core" units of the formation they're attached to, so I can definitely see it as "Necron Warriors only" for the core Phalanx.

For the other formations, where the Necron Lord is added "later", by the rules, there's no limitation to where it can be put: unless specified, added characters can be put in any unit in their parent formation.

Agreed. The situation is muddy.

personally, I couldn't care less where they got added.

if you are silly enough to put one with Pariahs, you deserve to lose your Lord :)

I'm ambivalent - I'll be happy with whatever Corey decides but I agree it needs clarification on the list.

I would suggest allowing lord on Necron Warrior, Destroyer, Heavy Destroyer or Flayed Ones.

It's just a matter of adding it to the "Notes" section of the Necron Lord data sheet:

"A Necron Lord character may be added to a Necron Warrior, Destroyer, Heavy Destroyer or Flayed Ones unit."

I've misplaced my 40k Necron Codex, but I thought Pariahs were often body guards for a Necron Lords? Certainly I don't see why they shouldn't be able to join Immortals - that's one of the most common units you see them leading in 40k and it sounds right too.

hence why my lords join the pariah units, not for tactical advantage, but for fluff reasons.

Well maybe specifying that they can be added to simply anything except spiders (leave that one for scenarios maybe ragnarok...), would be the way to go then. Especially as people have apparently been playing it that way.  Disallowing pariahs and immortals just doesn't seem right to me. It's like saying an ork warlord can join boyz but not nobz!

I just never put them on anything that can't come back. :)

Though with the destroyers, I always meant to change that to mean that it was specifically supposed to be a Destroyer Lord.
