Chroma's posting and an experience from this weekend has prompted me to give this warning to all who do their own resin casting.

Pipboy, Moscovian, Chroma, be on note:

The bottom 50cc or so of my Smooth-Cast resin seemed extra 'sticky' and/or corrosive. I lost two molds due to stickage.

Thus, it is best just to waste the final dollar or two of resin in order to keep your molds safe.

Hmmm, I haven't reached the bottom of my bottle yet so I can't confirm.  What I may do is try 'wasting' a mold that I have no need for anymore to see if it is a batch problem (it would be good to know).

Thanks for the warning though! I'll report back here when I 'get to the bottom' of things. :p

Stir and shake?

I've never used resin for modelling, but have messed around with Polyester resin for mounting lab specimens this week - this stuff benefits from being stored in a refrigerator. Would that help here?

Yes, I think I could have benefitted from more vigorous shaking. Not when I was down in the dregs, but earlier when the bottle was less depleted.

Are we still talking about resin?

I've always given the bottles a good shake every time I go to pour some molds and I've not had a problem yet. Having said that though, I have had a few pours where the reaction has gone all crazy. I don't know if there was a bad mix ratio or what, but I've had the resin take *forever* to harden - and when it did it was mostly clear!?! Wierd. I just waited all day for it to harden and pulled it out. In the end it was fine but I still don't know why it did that. And that wasn't even at the bottom of a bottle.

Damn it all sounds so complicated and mysterious! :(

Yeah, I've been shaking the original shipping bottles and then transfering that into "control" bottles for mixing... I shake those too.

The only "weirdness" I've had is some small portions of a cast that just won't cure; it stays sticky/gummy forever.  I assume I didn't stir well enough.

We can talk about any sort of stuff that you want, my man.

You have to be prepared for a steady stream of disappointments until the learning kicks in.

Well, I was able to confirm this the hard way.  There is a a sticky problem with the Smooth-On resin for sure, although this wasn't at the bottom.  I've clearly got 1/3 of my resin left and the stickiness flat out ruined my DE Raider mold      .  I'm going to call Smooth-On to see if they have any suggestions but for now I just wanted to warn everybody that this is not just in Otterman's head (or his measuring cups, more accurately).

Weirdly enough, I'm nearing the 25% point in my current bottles of resin.

Heya Moscovian, what kind of resin are you using? I noticed the sticky using the Smooth-Cast 310 product, but my current bottle is 305. Guess we'll see if it exhibits the same behavior soon.

Moscovian, don't chuck that mold yet. Give is a day or two to cure and try to demold the piece. It may not cure fully, but i might cure enough to get it out. I've had that happen before.

Thx pipboy - I was getting ready to fling it across the room in frustration.  The DE Raider has been a taxing project (not fun which is not good for a hobby) so this was just a horrible sight to come home to.
