I recently aquired two FW reaver titans on Ebay. for a total of ?15. Sounds like a good deal right? Well perhaps no. After recieving the models and paint striping them I'm a bit disappointed in the quality of the cast. I can't really figure out if they are just poor quality originals or perhaps even recasts. Now I don't want to start whining if these are just general problems with the Reaver model, but even though I only paid half price I'm still wondering if I should complain... I'm currently stripping the models of paint so I'll wait a bit before I post any pics but here's the general problems I've found: Main problems: Holes and deep corners have resin "balls" in them caused by air bubbles in the original mould. More air bubbles than usual IMO. Particularly on weapons, feet and other small parts. Does the FW reaver head only have tubes on one side of the head? Panel lines are poorly defined The seller has listed a total of 5 FW Reavers. An unusual high number but technically not that unrealistic if he had a AMTL army. Also it entirely possible that he recieved some poor casts from FW, got replacements but decided to use the poor casts anyway. I'm not familiar enough with resin casting to know if the Reaver model is particularly easy to recast so I'm in serious doubt here... |

Obviously the casts look even worse with the paint remains cluttering everything. The many air bubbles suggests a poorly made mould. The missile launchers look like the mould pars have been misalligned. A speay undercoat will definitely help. ...but still... what do you think? |

FW stuff can be pretty hit and miss and they do tend to send out replacements for badly cast stuff. I usually avoid buying second hand FW stuff to avoid getting all the bad casts that people sell off. My Reaver is an OK cast. But that cirtainly doesn't look any worse than some of the minis I have gotten at some points. Even if they were recasts the seller might have bought them like that without knowing in the first place. |

Lots of filling lies ahead of you. I reckon it was stuff he got replacements for. |

My Reaver was a pretty good cast, but then I got it very soon after it came out, when presumably the moulds were still new and in good condition. Whether they've all been as good since I don't know. |

(Warmaster Nice @ May 11 2007,10:35) QUOTE Holes and deep corners have resin "balls" in them caused by air bubbles in the original mould. I'd say this is almost a dead give-away as to them being "knock-offs"; those resin ball "beads" aren't something I've seen on FW stuff but something that often shows up in amateur casting. Most FW errors are shifts of the two halves of a mold, incomplete "filling" or damaged detail, not "over-filling". Well, if you can get out the trouble spots, you've still got Reavers! *laugh* |

Qualitatively inferior to my two FW Reavers, by a long way. I suspect knockoffs. |

Chroma could be right. Bubbles inside the model indicate incomplete filling of the mold by resin. Typically this is caused by trapped air. I would expect a professional outfit like FW to use an over-pressure or under-pressure system to minimise those kinds of bubbles. Now little balls on the outside of a model indicates bubbles in the original mold - not just the model. I would hope the FW would not use a poorly poured mold like that. Again, I expect that FW would use an over-pressure or under-pressure system to get rid of that. So maybe we are looking at some recasts. Or maybe it was just a new guy's first few pours at FW. |

OK... slightly off topic, but going along the lines of FW casts (Can't find the preveous thread about FW quality). Quite a few years back, I got a bunch of FW stuff, but only touched a few of the stuff I purchased. A few of the Tau ships, the rear was very badly cast and had a few holes in them. I ended up ignoring them as they were at the rear. But remembering a few people mentioning that they complained to FW and they replaced them. Just wondering what you ended up doing to get them replaced? Did you need to provide photos or return the faulty ones? Before people get the wrong idea, I'm just wondering how they avoid being scammed??? And also wondering if I should have checked the quality of my ?150 worth of stuff I bought over a year ago. Probably do that tonight. |

My 4 warhounds from FW all have the same poor quality moulding on the left side of the carapace and the longer leg of each supplied. I have had them about 2-3 years so maybe they have redone the mould. I have emailed FW about this amtter as I intend to order more but not if the problem has not been fixed. Has anyone else noticed this? D |

Well they've been very good at cleaning up their aircraft moulds for the AI release. However many of their tanks and also the old Bunkers are absolutely horrible as well. I'm still leaning towards a recast as a closer look at some of the legs reveal that the ankle as pretty much missing due to lack of resin. ...if these were originals they're undoubtedly be the worst casts I've ever seen. |

The FW Epic Reavers I ordered and bought on Games Day Germany (beginning of August 2006) were quite poorly cast. Your picture minus the paint and other additions doesn't look that different than them. |

Hmmm ... at first I'd say "bootlegged" ... but I have seen some F/W Miscasts too ... I don't know ... but you may want to contact F/W ? But if you keep them ... you may have a lot of work to do ... I had to contact Doug/DRM in the UK to call F/W as I have been awaiting a very poorly cast turret for my AI AX 1-0. They had not replied to me since late Apr. They may be busy and some miscasts get by them ? ![]() |

Right... Well I'll probably write a mail to the seller then. Any suggestions to a polite way of asking werther he's ripping me of? BTW these are the auctions in question. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....=1&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....=1&rd=1 The auction does say that the models have been remodeled and converted but that diesn't really cover fake parts would you say? ![]() |
