Anyone here have much of the FW guard stuff?

What's the quality of the casts like in the way of things that  break easily, mould lines, bubbles etc?

Specifically thinking of:

Chimeras (multilaser one).
Manticores
Basilisks
Hydras

I have ordered Basilisks and Hydras as well as Leman Russes.

FW quality is usually very good and the detail superb. That said, it seems to depend on how old the model is. Their molds deteriorate over time and if you are unlucky enough to get yours from an old mold at the end of its life then the quality is horrible: details fused or missing altogether, air bubbles, flash etc. However, they are usually good (or so I've heard) in replacing any miscasts.

The models are made of hard resin so even Basilisk barrels are very brittle and break easily. They are a pain to glue back.  And the less said about Leman Russ hull lascannons the better... :(

I've got mixed feelings about the IG. They are very well detailed but do suffer from the above mentioned mould problems. In a way I prefer the SG / E40k Basilisks (Or any chimera hull variant) because stuff like panel lines and rivets are clearer defined. Exaggerated yes, but from a painters perspective the exaggeration makes them easier to paint. Also paint chips off easier on resin models.

And one more thing: as the models are made from Resin it's even more important to wash them than with metal models. Imagine washing all those brittle parts...

I agree about the quality, but in my oppinion the FW models have one big problem: the size of the tracks.
They are way to small.  The Leman Russ looks like a Ferrari with wheels from a tricycle.
The width may be more realistic compared with real tanks but the metal models with their oversized tracks are cooler.

Manticores
Basilisks
Hydras

I have the stationary platform-mounted versions of all three of these for my Death Korps.

The quality is definitely superior to the SG sculpts IMHO... my Medusas especially were superb casts.

I did have a pack of three Stormblades delivered that were miscast (Muddy details around the track links) and FW replaced them free of charge.

The chimeras and hydras I got from FW had great detail in places, but terrible moulding in the sides and hydra guns.  With all the other substandard casts I've got, it's pretty much put me off FW.

Why didn't you get them to replace the miscast models?

Their customer service when replacing duds is first-rate.

I'd say about 50% of purchases I make from them have some kind of minor problem, all of which they're happy to fix for you.

So, uh, why didn't you call them?

So get your mate to send an email.

Same result, no cost.

I'd agree with E&C.  The inconvenience will cost you (or your friend) a buck or two for the call and will save you a big headache.

I had a problem with their order a few months ago but felt guilty about calling since it was a correction on PREVIOUS mistake.  Thinking they'd balk, I posted here.

With some coaxing (might have been from E&C come to think of it) I called them and they were more than happy to ship the correct items, no questions asked.

CAVEAT: They did recommend calling, NOT emailing, if you have a problem with an order.

And therein lies the problem. Not everybody has english as the first language, you see. And while my written English is great I have as many problems pronouncing it correctly as the next Finn. So the "headache" is trying to explain what I mean without being misunderstood. Which takes time. And with the international call rates it becomes a problem, as Hena said.

Last time I had a problem I emailed. Got an auto reply asking me to phone. I did nothing but still got an email reply after a few hours solving my problem.

Hmmm not exactly flash reviews. If two newish epic players were about to buy 14-15 chimeras each, would you recommend to them that they get the SG or the FW ones?

The SG have all exactly the same stowage which is a shame IMO, but it sounds like they may actually be a better choice?
