I ask because I was thinking of getting a relatively cheap one to do my basecoating (I had a Badger 350-3 in mind) and was wondering what others? experiences of doing this are. I know the cheaper ones are limited in application but I really am only interested in doing basecoats. |

I prime with black spray. I then use a semi-fancy single-action Badger and Vallejo Model Air paints for some basecoating: Tau models and bases. |

I'm fairly sure it's a Badger 200 NH. I use canned air with it, along with Vallejo Model Air colors. I use distilled water and some "airbrush cleaner" to keep it clean. I've been told that a top-fed airbrush would be easier to use and I tend to believe it. The finish is very nice and smooth. It's much easier to control than a spray can. That said, I think I'd get the same results with any airbrush; I don't really know how to use one, but I can slap some paint on things with it. |

I have a double action Paasche and a single action Paasche. I use them for basecoating miniatures and doing camo on vehicles. The I use the double action brush much more because of its versatility, even though it is harder to clean. Once you get the mix right, the finish is much better than a spray can. Also, you can airbrush foam and other things that get melted by spray paint. In the long term they are cheaper, but are also more of a hassle. I normally use Tamiya paints in the airbrush as they seem to work really well. I have pushed through GW, Polly S, inks and even watered down PVA glue (although the glue only through the single action brush which uses an external mix). I think that is where the airbrush really shines - you can use almost any colour you want as opposed to the ones available in cans. |

In theory I wouldn?t mind using spray cans but in my experience the readily available ones (e.g. Tamiya) are not great quality paint. For my Dark Angels I still had an old GW Dark Angel Green spray can but they only do the base coats now. |

Convenient topic. ?I've been thinking of getting an airbrush meself after seeing a few cheap kits at ?15-20 - though I'm well aware I'd probably get what I pay for - and looking through an old issue of Amazing Figure Modeller (a 'dinosaur special' issue  ).Any pointers on the basics, anyone? ?Or which links to the basics or 'what airbrush?' articles would you recommend? ?Thanks. |

It needs to be quite thin to avoid clogging the nozzle. Making sure the brush is cleaned properly after you're finished is critical. If not cleaned properly, it can be a pain to even take them apart (Aztek brushes are apparently easily ruined by not cleaning.) Other than that, practice and patience are your best friends. |

If you've tried it, is Vallejo Model Air thin enough to use as is? I haven't tried it, but from what I've heard it is usable right out of the bottle. OTOH, I've also heard that the only difference from the other Vallejo lines is the amount of thinner used. So you end up paying more for less pigment, and you will probably have troubles using it with a brush. So I would say the regular Vallejo lines are more economical. |

The one time I attempted to airbrush...I never could get the paint mix right. To thin, it just washed off. Too thick, clogged the nozzle. Sigh. I finally gave up. Maybe I was doing something wrong? ib |

I have a top feed airbrush and use it to base colour all my models after using GW basecoats. I use GW paints through it, it is a minor challenge to get the mix right, you are looking at between 8:1 - 10:1 to get it to work well. My airbrush is ual action so I can control the airflow and the amount of paint. This helps when your mix is not quite right. I think airbrushes are the only way to go. The airbrush I use is an AB series, not to expensive and easy to pull apart and clean. I use a small compressor, you will find that it is cheaper to pay $200AU for a compressor, than buying cans at $10-20AU. The compressor will pay for itself in under a year. Cheers CAL |

hmmmm.. already have a compressor from work, you guys are starting to convince me. with a cheap "beginer" set up, can you still control the width of the spray and everything ? and how much do you generally have to spend to avoid wasting money on somthing that wont work well ? |
