I'm having major problems in varnishing my forces!! I'm using GW's Purity Seal (Satin Varnish) spray. Sometimes they come out nice and protected other times the varnish gives them a melted look and ruins all the colours.....

Worst example is my ork dreadnought which was a great silver colour (with oily - black- wash) with bright red patches... This is what happened after the varnish:

So I have tried putting on a layer of 'ard coat (gloss varnish) first then spraying with Purity Seal but this hasn't solved the problem.... ?

I did 2 land raiders recently and one came out well and the other melted - same technique with both gloss then satin spray the results are:

Any advice?? I'm thinking I need to find a decent matt varnish which I can paint on instead of spray!!

I suggest you use GW 'Ardcoat (Which is stupidly shiny, but hear me out).

After you've created your well-protected candy-like miniature, hit it with a coating of Testor's Dullcote.

It brings it back to an awesome looking Matt finish.

'Ardcoat for protection, Dullcote for finish.

Thanks E&C have ordered some. I use 'ard coat already and yes its stupidly shiney so tried to use the GW spray stuff to stop the glare!!

I'll try this other stuff and see how it goes. Its soooo frustrating to have all your hard work ruined at the last stage....

I've had the same problem with Purity Seal.

E&C - does Testors Dullcote provide a similar level of protection as Purity Seal?  i.e. is the 'Ardcote strictly necessary?

I would not recomend using Dullcote on its own on anything except plastics.

Humidity is the key with varnishing.

Also it is better to spray one light fast coat and wait for the result then giving a heavy seal at once.

I'm quite content with the GW ones.

Does anybody know if that when a model is 'dull' like orkybob has if it is possible to relive the model again with a glossy varnish?

I have heard that there are methods of recovering from this varnish effect that does indeed involve applying a new coat of gloss varnish, though I've not had cause to try it.

I'll see what a coat of 'ard coat does to the dreadnoughts.. it can't make them any worse!!

I'm not sure if it's available outside the US, but I've always been happy with Floquil's products.

I've all but given up on spray varnishes after testing a few, including Winsor & Newton matt for acrylics.  Most turn out glossy, grainy, or develop white discolouration (W&N).  I actually have much better results with purity seal!

I use purity seal for some gaming minis; otherwise I'm fond of Coat d'arm's brush-on matt, which is slightly satin but only as much as the paint beneath it, which is okay by me.  Vallejo matt varnish is really matt, but seemed to have a slight dulling effect the time I tested it.

IIRC Dullcote is rarer than kroot teeth in the UK.  I think one or two shops sell it, but with my experience of sprays I haven't checked up on it.

Vermis: Check out the link I posted above for Dullcote.

They're the only online UK-based retailer I know of. :)

Might be the weather, as blackhorizon pinted out, but I never had any great problems with varnish hereabouts; and a good trick, already mentioned, is to give a nice thick coat of brushed gloss varnish, and then top that with matt varnish - painted details vanish under the gloss to reappear when the spary is applied.

Oop, sorry E&C.  Y'see, I just assumed that was a link to an American site.

Hehe, no.

It's actually a Horse-rider's supply store, but as long as they sell Dullcote I'm happy to be their patron. :)
