Thanks for the tips guys. the gloss on the dreadnought didn't do anything apart from make it look shiny.. so its a shiny, melted dread now...

I guess it could be the weather as I do apply it outside and the example with the Land Raiders the spray was done on different days. Both had a brushing of gloss though... Lets hope the Dullcote works when it turns up :-)

Btw have done base coat (ie 2 dry brushings) of an assault squad and a dev squad (with rhino transports) along with a detachment of whirlwinds tonight . Hopefully the detailing and basing will be done by early next week so I'll have something to test the new varnish on when it arrives!!

As far as spraying, I've never had a problem with Varnish, but I did once use an undercoat spray on a very humid day and it near-ruined some miniatures, the paint went very granular and rough. Warm dry days out of direct sunlight seem the best.

I had exactly the same issue as you had:
Sprayed the GW Satin Varnish and it looked fine. Used it outside a few days later and the colors on the minis becam very dull and looked like melted.
I thought it was me as I sprayed some layers on it.

Seems to be a problem with the air humidity? I now use the classic variant and apply it with my brush, works much better so far. Is more work, but you can influence the end result.

Hmm sounds like it may have something to do with the weather then. I'll try the dullcote stuff when it arrives but also might be worth me doing it in the shed rather than outside....
Failing that I'll buy some stuff to paint on rather than spray.

I'm not sure if it's available outside the US, but I've always been happy with Floquil's products.

floquil is the BEST stuff hands down for primer or clearcoat, but i cant even find it IN the u.s. anymore. where do you get it mr. D. S. sir ?

I got it at my favorite indie hobby store, but they don't carry it anymore  :(  and I'm almost out of sealer. I could be wrong, but Floquil might not exist any longer.  :(  I agree, their primer and sealer was top notch. I never had any problem with the sealer, except when it was my fault.

sadly i fear you are correct. i have switched over to testors for primer. for varnish im useing a krylon product. there spray paints are too thick for priming anything but scenery, but all there spray stuff is just about fool proof. and i can be VERY foolish. ( i dont CARE if its raining... i wanna paint these NOW.... :p )
