Hey guys, just wanted an opinion on what a good rate for painting figures might be. My life has been a little busier than I'd like lately and I have a little extra spending money to the point where it might be more worth my time simply to have my armies painted by someone else. In your opinion what is a fair rate for painting someone's figures, and what factors would you take into account. I am assuming all the factors below plus some I probably missed but am unsure on what would be a fair rate. 1. hourly rate vs basic deadline 2. number of minis to paint 3. size of minis 4. level of detail (TTS vs expert painted) 5. paints provided 6. minis assembled/not-assembled I will have already assembled most of what I want painted. I have half a mind to simply get them to Table Top Standards. One primary color, a secondary, maybe a highlight, with a final finish/protector. Bases done just standard dirt/rocks. Bare in mind I'm US based so I'm leaning more locally but potentially am open to shipping. And obviously it needs to be with someone I'd trust. I'm not quite ready to pull the trigger yet, just doing a little research but I am itching to get these done in the near future at some point. Thanks guys! ![]() |

1. I would asume you would get a quote for the whole army rahter than the hour 2. Obviously the more minatures you need painting the more expensive it gets, also depends on how busy the pro painter is as way to many and they may pass if they flat out with work. 3. Size if also going to cost more as it means more paint used and more time, but depends some people can spend more time painting a 6mm model than a 28mm depending on the detail ! 4. Level of detail. massive difference beteen TTS and expert, depends what you want them for ? If it to use quite often then just go table top standard, People get confused thinking table top standard has to be sub par, you get very quick results with tts 6mm and they can llok awesome, expert painting means better detail such as highlights, extra colours and are amazing, however they obviously cost more money as it takes more time. 5. I presume the painter will provide the paints, its not like you are going to save money giving him the paint unless you are having a lifesize uss enterprise painted and you have made your own paint. 6. Some minatures are an absolute nightmare to paint once assembled, it depends on the mini, if you are talking old 6mm forumware etc, arms legs and back packs are going to cost you money for the painter to assemble as its his time you are on. Maybe glueing your own minatures may be worth while. It depends on the minature, without seeing what you are planning its hard to say, you had best speak to the painter before hand and he will recommend dependig on how he like to paint i.e it it makes them more difficult or awkward to paint. Hope that helps, May be worht post up what army you are looking at also, Regards Epic ![]() |

This man used to hang around here - he was painting Onslaught minis at one point: http://mickeysminis.com/ UK based, but the weak pound might make it worthwhile... |

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll definitely put it all into consideration. And yeah... I saw primarch's post last year about getting his models painted. The way I see it, all epic painters are either booked for the better part of this century... OR... the painters are soooo intimidated by his "Collection" that it's as though he never had any models to begin with. ![]() |
