Absolutely love your army, found it so inspirational it was the final thing to encourage me to buy my first sisters. I'm still relatively new to painting so was wondering if you had any tips for how you did your sisters? Did you use a wash on them etc.

Any help would be really appreciated! Starting the painting is daunting atm!

Thanks, I'm glad it's given you the motivation start some Sisters :)

As far as general painting advice goes, I started by deciding what veiwing distance I wanted the minis to look good at. I work to around 20cm as I like to get close in when taking photos. I think most (sensible!) people assume they will be viewing minis at something closer to 2-3ft, and if this is the case you can save a whole lot of time by cutting out uneccessary detailing and highlights. Just make sure your colours are vibrant and neatly applied and they'll look great. Especially if you have a whole army of them.

A lot of people are daunted by 6mm but there's no need to be. The surfaces are tiny, so most of the time you don't need to achieve fancy blending. It's more a case of blocking in colour and edge highlighting bigger models like vehicles. A steady hand does help, though.

With regard to specific colours etc., I basically copied the old GW colours for the Order of Our Martyred Lady and simplified them for 6mm. Something along the lines of:

- Undercoat black
- Highlight prominent surfaces black with a touch of white and blue (I used GW Caledor Sky)
- Pick out cloaks in GW Mephiston Red
- Highlight cloaks with a lighter red (I used Vallejo Bloody Red)
- Edge highlight with GW Caledor Sky - use sparingly, we don't want to overpower the black
- Dot a few prominent edges with white

Beyond that, use a sturdy Gold for the gold details. Something like GW Retributor Armour. Don't make the mistake of using pink in the faces. I start with Vallejo Dark Fleshtone and highlight with a mixture of that and Vallejo Cadmium Skin.

I hope this helps!

That's incredibly helpful (thanks for colour tips as well). You didn't finish with a wash?

No, the undercoat is a pretty good black so you wouldn't see a wash on the armour.

And if you want to shade the cloaks, don't wash or shade with black - mix in a touch of blue to your red. I actually didn't learn how to shade red properly until after I'd finished the troops and Rhino-based tanks, but it worked nicely on the Cathedral and I wish I'd known earlier!

I did wash the tank tracks with Nuln Oil. But most of the small weapons on tanks and Sisters I highlighted with Vallejo Gun Metal and left recesses or joins between components black. Perhaps if you're using Vanguard or Onslaught minis the features are chunky enough to suit a wash on the Gun Metal parts, though.

Hi all,

I can't attach any images here (says file is invalid), but I have photographed several more SoB formations and put them on MiniWars:

Next formation for this army is an Inquisitor with his Storm Troopers and Valkyrie transport. Although I also fancy doing some 3mm titans...

The little van with the fun logo on the side is very cute.

Absolutely stunning work, as always elsmore, I geek out at the little details every time.

The SM landing craft is a HEAVY bit of metal, will that stand be strong enough for it?

Yeah, it's a heavy duty plastic job from Australia IIRC. 3mm thick and double cube magnets. Good enough for the Forumware LC, which I'm guessing is even heavier than the GW version.

Hi! Superb work and thanks for the basing tutorial. Regarding the flight stand. Can you tell me where they are available from? I have some from an army I bought and would like to know where to get more for consistency thanks.

A quick Google search turned these up:

They are definitely the same design I have. Probably the same store, but it was that long ago I can't remember :)

First print on a Sonic Mini 4K. The print quality is unbelievable! Hard to show in photos, but I can actually read REPENTIA on the throne...

You are welcome to one of those pictured, assuming the other survives basing and painting! I printed 2 purely for redundancy.

elsmore do you have a sliced file for the party throne? Been painting up my deathwatch and I need some more inquisitor variants. Also glad to see bernie's storm troops getting more love, those dudes were a bunch of fun to paint up! also love your work on the SOB's you really inspired me to try to push my basing schemes for my minis, keep up the good work!

I can send supported files for the Throne parts if you like? Send me a PM if you want them. The only sliced file I have also includes the other models in the photo, and is for the Sonic Mini.

Yeah, I really like the Stormtroopers. Just the right amount of detail for 6mm. Thanks for the compliment, I'm glad I've inspired you to push the boundaries!
