Post subject: | Skulls for bases |
Hi! I have some interest in making some bases for my chaos projects and was wondering if anyone knew of a place to obtain small sized skulls for basing purposes. Those I have seen are more appropriate for 28mm scale not 6mm. Any advice or information is appreciated. Primarch |

I don't know when they're coming out, but you should put eyes on the skeletal bits from Microworld: viewtopic.php?f=137&t=31054 And failing those, perhaps a pack of skeleton spearmen or two, brutally hacked up to provide skulls/bodies as needed. |

Hi! Nice! Must have missed those. A definite thing to use. I would also like to see something "flat", to cover more area. I need some to cover a 100mm x 50mm area. Good call doomkitten! ![]() Primarch |

Green Stuff press mould em. find one tiny skull on a mini, or sculpt 1 on 1 stick. then press is many many times in to a suitable press mould substrate (sculpy, GS, etc) then press GS to your heart's content. Can do carpets of skulls with little effort that way ![]() pile is just one skull i pressed lots of times into the inside face of a conical depression in some sculpy: ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Speesshhhhh... And to think you'll ever get a job at GW this way. I can still see the sides of that building and your skulls should be made up from smaller skulls. Slacker |

it's a very simple technique using basic material and no 'actual sculpting' (unless you sculpt your own master skull to start … but it's not hard to find a skull to copy!). lots of tutorials for press moulding basics, this is an example: http://www.captureandcontrol.com/2010/0 ... -mold.html (just replace the BA device with a tiny skull, forget the bit about marking a small channel) for lots of skulls you just press the skull in again and again and again into the mould (so you remove it before the GS sets – lubricate it well) sticking the skull onto the end of a pin works well, makes it easy to pull out. once done you can 'mould' whole carpets of 6mm skulls just by smooshing green stuff into it – results are very flexible and can be applied to odd shapes, like the front of land raiders: ![]() not actually sure where mine went, the only one that was a bit tricky was that pile of skulls (less reliable results, and the mould broke after a couple … but then i only needed one ![]() 100*50mm is a pretty big area and would take time to do at this scale, but im not sure you'd find a faster solution than this at 6mm. |

Hi! The "test" case if you will will be on a base of those dimensions, but I am looking further into the future to actually making a generic "khornite" base with skulls. For my test case your method would work, but given the "size" of some of my projects I would need a source of mass production. I guess I will need to commission getting some skulls done and them having them done in mass via molds. A minor task compared to what needs to be done. ![]() Primarch |

yeah mass is fine – once you've made one you can just get it resin cast. Or, if you make a press mould exactly base size that wouldn't be too bad either (well unless you wanted 200 of them … which I guess in your case might be the situation!) |

That would be the plan, make a "master" and resin cast it. 200 is way to low by the way. ![]() Primarch |
