So I took advantage of the Onslaught sale to get a little project going - Japan's Sengoku Jidai set in the year 35XX. First up is the Uesugi Clan, masters of ranged combat and high-power magnetics, but behind on artificial intelligence and energy shielding. Less willing than most clans to deal with gaijin like the Dutch, English, Portuguese and Americans.

This is the first "prototype" model, a unit of Yari Ashigaru, armed with Plasma Lances and reflex armor.

I have the process down pretty well now: Reaper Paints: Nightshade Purple, Imperial Purple and Amethyst Purple, Pure Black base and weapon, with Shadowed Steel, Honed Steel and Shining Silver highlights. Boots are Dark Highlights with a Tanned Leather highlight, and then a little dot of Fire Red for the helmet sensor. The waist sash is Snow Shadow with Ghost White highlight. A light coat of Krylon matte sealer keeps it nicely together.

Still thinking over the Rigs, which are going to be the conveyances of the Samurai themselves. More as it develops!

Looks really nice. What are the notes for?

You mean the base label? It's a habit I picked up doing 3mm scale, lets me keep units straight so they stay in cohesion or whatever the system calls for. The silhouette tracks to a game sheet for easy reference, especially useful when teaching a game to new people. And the colored flag and such is intended for contrast since I have a few colorblind opponents 'round the club.

A little bit of artwork - since the question above about base labels and such, here's the full sheet I worked up for my Uesugi Clan force.

Image

The top row is for the Rigs, piloted by the Samurai of the various clans fighting for control of the Okami Technate, after the fall of the Konoye Shoguns. From left-to-right are the Command Rigs, the Tengu Rig Sergeants, the Tengu Rigs, and the Oni Close Assault Rigs, in groups of four units with a leader.

Below that are the infantry - three shotai of Yari Neo-Ashigaru, one shotai of Battlefield Neo-Shinobi. Below is a shotai of Teppo Neo-Shinobi - sniper teams. And to the right of that, three units of various grav vehicles, armed variously with heavy railguns, particle weapons and long-range multifire artillery missiles.

Painting moves forward - more to show soon once I work out exactly how I want to go about edging the tanks to make all these details really pop.

Coming back to this project after a long hiatus. Finally have an acceptable color scheme for the Uesugi tanks.

Also finally managed to gather some information on the Kandas, who will be fighting these guys.

The centerpiece of the warring clans' forces are going to be gigantic AI mecha called Ronin, provided by the folks at 15mm.co.uk. This one is Yoshitaka, and he has an antimatter lance that can seriously mess you up.

They're meant for 15mm scale but in 6mm they run about 60 feet tall at scale. Very imposing! Only thing is I have to use epoxy on them, because CA is just not strong enough with the way the parts fit - they just shear right off under pressure. Makes the construction a little laborious but definitely worth it!

What will you use it as? Supremacy suit?

It's an artificially intelligent robotic whoop-ass applicator. They were used by the collapsed Konoye Shogunate to maintain peace in the Home Islands. There were originally fifty of them - three were destroyed during a nuclear attack on Neo-Edo that killed off the Konoye Clan's leadership and brought down the Shogunate. Now that the Shogunate has fallen, the remainder have gone off on their own and allied with other factions. Yoshitaka, here, is allied with the Uesugi Clan.

In game terms, if there are any Ronin on the table at all, a side without a Ronin will be at a disadvantage.

Came home from a very desultory New Year party across the street and was too wired to sleep, so I did a little painting until I felt sleepy. With all the contours, this is a really time-consuming model to paint. It's in the "This is Ugly as Hell" phase, where the mid-toning is only about a third done. But the basic shapes of the color are there. You can see the runny, dark base coat - it's not necessary to have this basic coat be too uniform, so long as it runs into all the crevices and cracks of the model without filling them up with a big wad of paint. It's more like a wash, really.
