A couple of years ago I absolutely fell in love with Dobbsy's Space Wolf list. (Now passed on to UvenLord) I loved the concept, the theme, and the thought put into the design. I knew right away that not only did I have to play this list, which quickly became my favorite, but I also had to paint an army to its parameters to play it with.

Back in the days of 2nd Edition, I'd painted some infantry with tartans on their shoulder pads, and I always thought the Space Wolf fluff would fit well with a Highland theme. So I decided to go all the way with this idea and make a "Highland" Space Wolf army.

So here are some photos from what I have so far. I showed the first couple of stands a long while back in my old Imperial Guard thread, but I've added a lot more since then.

Each Grey Hunter pack is led by a member of the Wolf Guard that acts as their sergeant.

Wolf-Brother Duncan is the sergeant of my first pack of Grey Hunters. His preferred weapon is the chain-claymore.
Being a genetically-altered super soldier, he is not only able to wear absolutely nothing under his kilt whenever he takes
off his power armor, but he can also wield this ridiculously large sword with one hand.

Wolf-Brother Campbell is the sergeant of my second Grey Hunter pack. Campbell never quite caught on the finesse
needed to wield a large sword that both makes and counteracts its own torque, but he does like to lift heavy
weapons. So Cambpell has gone with the very popular Highland Wolf option of rushing to battle with huge axe.

Wolf-Brother Angus is the sergeant of my third pack of Grey Hunters. Angus simply could not believe his good
fortune when he saw the design specs for the Ogryn Ripper Gun. What's this? A massive automatic shotgun that
fires a prodigious number or rounds in close combat, required virtually no maintenance, AND is built to allow it to be
struck repeatedly across the head of your opponent without breaking? EMPEROR'S PERFECTION!

It's a bit non-traditional, but Angus has always been willing to go his own way.

The entire Grey Hunter section of my first Great Company, led by Battle Leader Connor.

(Note, this Great Company is currently led by a Battle Leader, because I want my
Wolf Lord unit to have bagpipes. I haven't finished making that model yet.
But I'm working on it!)

Connor has traded in his Chain-claymore for a ancient power sword bequeathed to him by his mentor.

Nest up: What good is a Great Company formation without the addition of a couple of Long Fangs? No Good!

But surely every Great Company needs there own piper. Heck, you need a whole pipe band.

Sadly the plan seems to ditch them from the Great Company Table of Organisation, . . .

Hey, that's cool! If you have a public post any of your daughter's pipe band's performances on YouTube or
anywhere, please share.

Here is a work-in-progress picture of my first Piper. I thought the scout would make a perfect model for bagpipes,
because his arms would be workable and his mouth is open; allowing me to insert the chanter. Originally I
thought I'd put one on every Wolf Priest stand. (The pipes providing the inspirational boost.) But this guy has
turned out to be..... fiddly.

Also, the arms just weren't long enough for me to be able to cut them at their joints and pose them the way I
wanted. So I cut up two more scouts, taking just a little past the joint for each portion of the arm. Building a lot
of these guys will thus be expensive in scouts. (Technically, this means this guy has the arms of a gorilla. In
GW terms, I call it "Heroic Piper Scale".)

I.... umm...... er.... I... ah........ yeah.

<expletive>

Thanks for the heads up. Well the list with Long Fangs is currently approved, and I've spent time modeling and painting these guys. So for now I'll just keep playing with them. ;-)

After all, you can't throw a relative out of your clan just because the census bureau lost track of him. I mean, if he forgets to bring whiskey to the war effort, then sure! But not just because his papers have vanished.

As promised, here are some pictures of the Long Fangs that I usually add to my Great Company formation.

In keeping with the fluff of Space Wolves, I decided to use the same pack markings on every three stands of
Blood Claws. (This would later come back to bite me with Rhinos. ) I then used the same pack markings on
every two stands of Grey Hunters.

For Long Fangs, which have usually had the numbers in their packs further reduced after years of casualties, each
stand gets unique pack markings. (Again, I wasn't thinking ahead to Rhinos. I'll think of something.)

Here you see Wolf-Brother Argyle with a chain-claymore and sgian-dubh leading one pack, and Wolf-Brother
Maddock with lightning claws leading the second pack.

Wolf-Brother Hume felt a little useless with his bolter when standing next to so many heavy weapons, and so he
chose another traditional weapon: the Lochabar Axes. Sure, he may be compensating, but any calvary who tries
to ride over these archer^H^H^H long-range specialists will be in for a nasty surprise.

The Lochabar Axe was a bit of a stretch for my meager modeling skills, and I'm quite proud of it. I started by
carefully carving away all of the model's bolter, except for the barrel, and then gluing a bit of plastic rod to each
end of that. I added the blade from a chaos beastman's pole-arm, and then made a hook with greenstuff. I
think the result looks convincingly like the marine is holding a Lochabar Axes, and thanks to keeping the bolter barrel
he even has one hand wrapped around the axe's shaft.
