Hi

I'm trying to paint up 4 Land Riders for an event that I am organizing (

The problem is I am failing terribly at it :{[]

I basecoted them black
painted the threads and sponson turrets vallejo gunmetal metal
added some white and red and ... noticed that it looks really bad

Tried to highlight the edges with grey but that went all wrong.
Tried adding a bit of copper to the rear but that's still not it
Tried dry brushing the entire mini with gunmetal metal but that went really really bad.

Basically I'm out of Ideas.

If you have any tips on how to paint them or some good pictures please post them here.
Any good tips/pics of infantry are also welcome!

Here are some photos of the latest WIP

Also if you know how these were painted the knowledge would be much appreciated :)

There's a guide for those tanks/marines here: http://www.adpublishing.de/html/iron_hands1.html

that guide is very useful

more generally I would suggest a black primer, but then basecoat the model in a dark grey, leaving the black showing in the recesses, this adds depth to the model but the eye still thinks of it as 'black' charadon granite was a great colour for this, although it may be worth going to the trouble of mixing up a bottle of a good, dark grey colour, it is often a good idea to add some blue to give it a hard, metallic feel

for highlighting, I suggest edging first in shadow grey (or whatever it is known as now) then for the sharp and bright edges mixing a few spots of a blue-grey into a large amount of white, get your brush saturated with it, then wipe off any excess, you should now be able to gently edge along the tops of panels and on sharp lines with thin layers of blue-white which will help the model look shiny

that's my suggestion anyway :)

ps. I'd avoid drybrushing personally as it can lend models a 'chalky/dusty' appearance which reduces the impact of the harsh black panels

I used that guide when doing my Pre-Heresy Dark Angels, definitely the way to go!

Yeah it doesn't get much better than that. I'd forgo the silver bits he does (being iron hands and all) and perhaps make the extreme edge highlights be more emphasized for templars but that's the recipe!

if i want something black i work from very dark grey as a mid point, something like vallejo black grey for blue toned or german grey for green toned and shade and hightlight from there.

even if it comes out too "grey" from you can always glaze it black with a thin black wash to keep the depth you create.

I'm with kyuss on the avoid dry brushing if you feel confident, templar in my mind should be clean lined, battle damaged maybe from all that purging of the unclean, but clean lined

I start with a light undercoat of black. Then airbrush a 50:50 mix basecoat of black and adeptus battle grey. I then hit it with a black wash before giving it a light drybrush of the same basecoat and then progressively add a light touch of astronomican and then a ever so light brush of pure astronomican.
The metals are painted about mid way through and given a black wash and then a black and brown wash.

Whites are painted on with astronomican first and then highlighted to white. With a light brown black wash in some parts to break up the starkness.

Cheers
Jim

Nah just regular 40kers. Though I have played a few playtest games of heresy with them.

Wip thread... sounds like too much commitment lol.
