Had one when I was younger, and it was annoying as hell. Spent more time having to adjust the distance between the brush and my eyes to be able to see clearly than I did painting! I prefer my specs!

Used one, didn't get on with it. Or other types of magnification. But I've heard from plenty who do. It's all relative. |

Mate, I have used something similar that clip onto my glasses. They are fantastic at seeing the level of detail on a model and have greatly improved my painting performance. The ones with the various magnification are the best. Cheers Aaron |

I've thought about getting some sort of magnifying device. My problem is in the opposite. I take my glasses off to paint. Clip-ons would do me no good. |

I haven't used any visor type devices before, so can't comment, but I can highly recommend this magnifier lamp that I bought last year from Argos. I also wear my reading glasses at the same time, and the resulting magnification works for me. I use it for all my painting, 6mm up to 28mm. Like S'Cipio, the depth perception thing has never been an issue for me. I found that I quickly got used to using the magnifier, and hand-eye co-ordination has never been a problem. Also, not wearing a visor means that it's easier to reach for everything else on the workbench for which I don't need the magnifier - ie. paint pots, water pot, palette, paper towels etc. One thing I did have to adjust to, however, was avoiding the temptation to paint far more detail than is really necessary. There's probably not much point in painting something that looks great under the glass if you can't see it with the naked (or spectacled) eye. But that's only a minor issue, and I think you'd get used to knowing instinctively when you're going to far. All in all, find the magnifier speeds my painting up rather than slowing it down. In fact, without it I couldn't do any painting since my close range eyesight is so bad these days. |
