Post subject:  New to 6mm, manufacturers you reccommend?

Hi,

I'm all new to 6mm Sci Fi, Epic Armageddon specifically.

I've managed to get myself one game and hands on some Dark Realm and Steel Crown models and am now looking out for some more to feed a growing addiction.

I've flicked through the proxy lists suggested stickied in this very forum but I'm looking for some personal opinions and experiences with the different manufacturers. Are they quick? What's the quality like in your hands? Who do you reccommend or think I should stay away from?

I'm looking at Imperial Guard proxies right now, but any WH40k race would be advice I'd love to see.

Also, on the specifics, Sentinels? In my first game (shout out to Matthew Arnold, thanks for that!) Matt explained to me why exactly Sentinels are awesome...but neither Steel Crown nor Dark Realm seem to have anything that looks right to me as a proxy. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

So the following are top notch and part of TacComs
SCP Exodus Wars
DRM
Onslaught Miniatures
Trouble Maker Games Defeat in Detail

I can personally vouch for CnC Solar Empire Marines and Microwotld Games. Lots of people use all the above

Sentinels are a harder item to proxy as is. They are pretty common on eBay still so there is that. However the rules for EA are nice due the abstraction they represent. For instance, it's perfectly plausible to use say a lightweight scout or ATV vehicle as a count-as for sentinels. The real important bit is that it's immediately clear (or easy to know for your opponent when you play) that these are such and such.

In example, I sold all my salamander scout vehicles years ago. However I need scout vehicles when I happen to use the Tank Legion list for my guard collection. Instead I use a small light weight vehicle that looks a whole lot like a centaur for that. What's nice is that I can also use those same models as actual Centaurs when I decide to play DKoK with my guards instead. Make sense? I find it really stretches my hobby dollar. :)

So some ideas are to find a atv, like DRM has, and say this is functionally equivalent to a Sentinel for my particular army in the battlefield. That's actually nice as that model could stand in for tarros scout vehicles so you can play Elysian Drop Troops as well and only have to buy/paint one model for both.

The Microworld and Solar Empire Marines lines both have some mechs that can work if you're dead set in having actual walkers on legs.

Another plausible approach is to say that your guard comes from a planet that has close ties to the Ad Mech. As such they actually have access to specialized scouting robots that take the role that would normally be filled by Sentinels.

And of course flea bay if money is less important than original models.

While the lines above don't have chicken walkers today, I don't think it'll be too long before someone gets something that works. So you can play the waiting game easily.

If you have specific armies/units you want recommendations on just ask

No one's going to mind an ATV eh?

That opens things up, I'll probably grab some of the buggies from DRealm for now, but I'd like some Walkers eventually, can keep an eye on Ebay for now.

Which manufacturers are actively producing new sculpts and models? My impression of the DRealm site is of something largely neglected, are they still making new stuff or just selling through what they've already got?

As for other races. Either Craftworld or Dark Eldar? Just, in general. Onslaught seems to have stuff for Dark Eldar but Craftworld eldar seems really tough to find good proxies for due to the number of unique models.

Hey,

Welcome to 6mm, I'm also new(ish)and it can be quite daunting starting at a new scale.

As already stated by Jimmy the list he gave is rather the cream of the crop. I can recommend first hand Dark Realm, Ontslaught & Exodus Wars all of which are rather pleasant to deal with.

Troublemaker Games currently has a Kickstarter running for wave 3 of Ork, Guard and Marine Style proxies.

OSM seems to have the handle on DE suitable proxies

The upcoming Eloi range from TMG should help the CWE. Wave #4 crowdfunder should be focusing on them a bit.

Eldar exodites are still kitbash and sculpts, usually based on Microworld oarts

TMG = Trouble Maker Games ... and their Wave #3 is on that indiegogo link ... Steel Crown/Exodus Wars site also carriers TMG and Onslaught ... And along with Microworld, you can get Exodites type from Exodus Wars ...

Just be aware that there might be some size discrepancies. At least with Troublemaker Games I've often drooled over their Skinnerz line, but the models are a good deal larger than their GW counterparts. The Skinnerz fighter for example has a wingspan of 4.5 cm, compared to the Fighta-Bommerz' 2.2cm, and the Beast class transport is 1.5 times the length of a Battlefortress. Similarly their characters are about 10mm tall. That's fine for the Warboss, but the Nobz are a bit too tall next to GW boyz for my taste.
If I could start over I'd have loved to have an army of Skinnerz, but the size difference makes me wary of mixing and matching with the models I already have. I don't own any deffkoptas though, so I look forward to seeing how the Skinnerz Scout Helicopters turn out...

4.5cms sounds about right if the fighter is to scale with the aircraft Forge World produced. The metal aircraft Citadel produced were clearly on a much smaller scale than the rest of the Epic range. If you look at the Epic Thunderhawk or Vampire Raider, for example, there's no way that 40 soldiers would fit on board. Forge World scaled their aircraft to 1/5 the size of their 40k equivalents (same as everything else) and they were about twice the size of the metal models.

Fair enough. And yeah, the citadel vehicles in general are definitely too small compared to the infantry. I don't mind the size of TMG's line in itself, but I don't want to add fighters to my units that are twice the size of the fighta-bommerz I already have. They'd look off next to each other. A fleet of Skinnerz fighters on their own would probably be just fine though.

It's just a word of caution in case Scutarii hadn't noticed the size difference and was looking to beef up some of his formations.
