And also some further extreme weathering and basing tests. Not sure what to do with the basing yet, as I dont want it to be too brown, but also don't want my infantry to blend in with the base too much. Attachment: Attachment: Attachment:

Looks brilliant. I tend to go to the extremes with my painting and weathering, and that's why my output is so slow ![]() Could you give a tutorial how you did the base? I would love to copy that ![]() |

Cheers! Yeah the weathering almost needs to be quite extreme at this scale to show at all, I'll have to see what the hydras look like when I've tried it out on them. The bigger base is vallejo desert sand, with blobs of vallejo sandy paste added to create the rocky bits. Then washed with just about everything I have! There are 7 different washes used on it, as I remember them: Top Left - Baccus basing system foundation wash Top Middle - Army Painter strong tone Top Right, Bottom Left and Bottom Middle- Army Painter dark tone (watered down in different amounts, watering paints down just seems to make it look messy though?) Bottom Right - Army painter soft tone Litle patch in the middle - Oil wash The little base is vallejo desert sand, gloss varnish and then an oil wash over the top. Not so keen on this one, but I'm gonna experiment a little more with oil washes on an unglossed base and see what happens. If none of these work I'll go with the Baccus basing system wash. Thing is I've got four Krieg infantry companies to get together soon, so wanted a basing technique that could just be painted on then washed, rather than drybrushing around tiny little feet! |

Thanks for the info. Washing is the way to go. Oils work well but need experimenting. I too use sandy paste, great product for our scale. |

Yeah I am a fan on using oils and enamel washes . Become a total junky for using AK interactive products. I find the FW resin tanks don't take it as well as white metal but that's due to the resin quality I find. (FW AI products were qualitatively better than their Epic line by the end) |

Hmm got my interest piqued with the AK product line, now I'm going to have to buy some and try it out before proceeding again! What is the difference between the AK washes and say, oil washes? Is it that much of a difference? |

You can use them similarly in technique. First the AK products are enamels. They dry faster than oils and can be used closer to the speed of acrylics almost. Two, their various grime and streaking products have a HUGE convenience factor being ready to go from the pot. Three, I find that I can use enamels with techniques like stippling easier than oils myself. Regardless, I use both extensively nowadays. |

I recommend to try them |

Hmm interesting, can you use them without varnishing first? Do they have similar properties to oils? May have to buy a couple of pots to try, any guidance on what colours to get for a browny/black grime look? Does it stain base colours like gw washes, or go into details properly like oils? |

Like I said, you use them with the same techniques as you would oils. In general gloss/satin varnish and paint away, dry, shape/cleanup with white spirit. I have used them direct on the acrylic paint (stippling) and they don't change the base the wash an acrylic wash does. YMMV of course and always be aware that white spirit or a turpinoid can attack the acrylic aggressively. |
