Post subject:  Basing colour scheme ideas

Hello all,

Just looking for a bit of guidance really. I am currently trying to find the best colour and basing scheme for my epic armies. Please ignore the rushed painting of the orks, they are done in the basic colours I'll be doing my steel legion in, just to see if they would stand out properly against the bases!

You're on the right sort of track but if you want to match the way GW did their Armageddon SL bases for their 40k models I'd suggest highlighting a lot more liberally with the light beige/cream and then adding small patches of greyness.

It really depends on which terrain type you wish to represent and offcourse if you want your bases to blend in with various terrain finishes/layouts you may have.

I like the two tone the best. It fits for urban city scapes and to rural areas

Thanks for all the replies!

Cheers for the link to the original Armageddon bases, though it seems that 6mm Steel Legion just kind of blend in too much if I try and match that kind of colour, thier camo is obviously too good!

I was trying to find something that wouldn't look too out of place regardless of which table they ended up on.

This may seem like a pretty bone question, but I have been having great difficulty preventing my basing from obscuring the minis at least slightly. I have heard about painting the minis first and then attaching them, but to my mind this would leave quite an obvious join? I think I will paint the bases first and them paint the actual figures afterwards.

Alternatively I have been looking at this product:

Apparently it goes on pretty smooth, and when given a brown wash looks like this:

Has anyone had any experience of it? Im just thinking it may mean I can paint my figures prior to basing, as there wouldn't need to be any drybrushing involved.

Cheers,
Tom

Everything that is dirt on my bases is done with Vallejo Sandy Paste (just differences in the coarseness and personal pref when picking one of their many products in that line). It's awesome and flexible. For insance

You can color it with paint and then paint it on.
You can directly apply it, let it dry and then paint on it or as I prefer, use washes/slurries to color them.
You can apply it, then apply more once dry to build up layers and height.
You can use it on urban stuff as a very diluted wash to provide some texture
You can easily embed sand or charcoal crumbles to make rocks

yada yada yada

some examples

Edit:
Even better, a picture of it going on and then what it looks like dried and washed

I agree with Jimmyz - Vallejo texture is great stuff to have in your miniature tool box. Start with the fine and work up if your new to it. Once you've gone a few rounds with it you can even mix and match textures to some pretty stunning effect. I regularly use dark lava earth. Fine white pumice or desert sand is good for 6mm.

Okay, thanks for the links, good looking stuff! Is the paste hard to paint on like I've heard the pumice stuff is, as I'd be painting it between legs etc. Think I'll get both sandy paste and desert sand for a bit of variety.

I've just posted a guide to making/painting bases/flight stands on my blog. It may be useful. Details in my post http://www.tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=26545

I use it without issue. There's NO uncovered plinths in my infantry stands. I do suggest various levels of water added depending on the effect or use you want. Very slight thinning for painting around the legs makes it less sticky and easier to paint. Direct application for more texture for ground. Very thing slurry for textures on flat surfaces aka rubble and streets.

also I suggest using various tools beyond just a brush. Believe it or not, the back of a hobby knife / xacto knife works as a great trowel.
