Hi all,

Has anyone had any success moulding with 'Instant Mold'? I dabbled with it on 28mm minis and i never got the results I wanted. Any tips/advice would be great,

I have not used instant mould, but i've used sculpy for press moulding a lot with good results. Do you need tips on the specific material, or the process?

Any help would be great Apoc. One thing I haven't done, which I think will help is to make a frame to mould in.

Framing the mould will help if this instant mould stuff is pretty hard (sculpy is so soft i often don't bother for small parts). For flat parts i also tend to mount the master on a bit of sprue, so that i can press down and pull out the part with a minimum of skew/rotation and avoid getting fingers near the mould when trying to pry the part out.

I've replaced some badly miscast FW turrets using instant mold. What are you trying to do?

Thanks for the tips so far.

I haven't got any specific plans yet, saw the instant mold today after a long time of no use and this sparked my curiosity. Wondering if it had been put to good use at the epic scale.

Had some good experiences with a blue/white french goo for plaster casting of building parts. Check my Nurgle cult link in sig.

I've tried it with 6mm scale infantry with not much success..... I'd personally recommend something like sculpy or kneadatite for press moulds, alternatively I've had very good results with Gedeo Siligum, both with resin and metal

The problem with oyumaru is that it melts when things get hot, so it's no use for metals or even most resins which get quite warm when they cure

the best option for super high quality moulds is pourable silicone, most decent modelmaking varieties are suitable and will give good results, I would recommend getting one with a long pot life (12 hours plus) if you don't want to buy expensive de-gassing kit, the long pot life gives time for bubbles to escape

The siligum has the advantage that it doesn't get bubbles easily, is relatively mess free, is food safe (unlike most casting silicones which have all kinds of heavy metals in the catalysts) so if your kids pinch some and swallow it, they're not going to end up on chelation therapy! it's also super fast to make moulds, I've made 6-8 moulds in an hour before

I used it to make backpacks for my chaos juggernaut riders.

I've used instant mold with some success for my IG:

The secret is framing the mold as Apoc stated above. If you have legos (4, 6, 8x2 bricks and an assortment of plates) you can build a frame in no time. For parts with a flat back like chimera tracks you only need to surround three sides. For other more complicated parts, like hulls, I put a top on it, in the form of a plate with an appropriate number of bricks on the bottom. Once you've encased the part fully in the instant mold and it has cooled, you take it out of the frame and choose an appropriate spot to cut it out. Putting a top on the frame really helps with getting the instant mold right up against the part and eliminating air bubbles. Then use green stuff or procreate in the two halves. I find it doesn't work well on gun barrels.

Once you're done with the mold you can throw all the bits into the hot water and mash it back together.

I used it here: http://www.taccmd.tacticalwargames.net/viewtopic.php?p=466360#p466360 to create Tau Devilfish.

The twinlinked drone pulsrifles are not hard to copy as they can be found on the Tau Piranhas from the Recon Pack still available from FW, problem is more with the top hatch as you need an existing turret to copy from.

To answer your question:

Instant Mold is very easy to work with, put how ever much you need to use in very hot (I use just boiled water from a electric water boiler) water for 1-2 minutes, take the Instant Mold up (its a bit hot, but you will not get burned from the Instant Mold, ofcause the water is hot, so I use tweezers) press it against the subject you want to copy, and let it cool down (takes a few minutes), if you fold it it will stick to it self and you will need to cut the Instant Mold open.

Mix Green Stuff and Miliput (I use the standard one) 50/50 and press it down into the form you just made, let it harden for some hours, I usually just let it sit through the night, and you are done.

Just trim the copy you created and glue it on to whatever you want.

Mind that in Denmark this is not illegal, you are alowed to make copies for own use, but legislation might be diffrent where you live, so look out for that.
