The DRM and EW human fighters might be worth a try:

DRM: http://www.darkrealmminiatures.co.uk/st ... t=4&page=1

EW: http://www.exoduswars.com/6mm-Roc-Multi ... rchSize=12

The wings would be easy to scratchbuild, so i suppose all you really need to do id find a bit to proxy the hull, even if the wings don't match.

Thanks for the suggestions Apoc. Not sure if the DRM Kronos might be a bit too big? The Lightning looks very dinky, like it shouldn't be much bigger than an MBT.

Do you need it to match GW SG flyers, or the FW AI ones? the old FW AI lightning presumably had a ~4cm wingspan? (don't have mine to hand to check)

The lightning is significantly bigger than a MBT. Its about 2/3 the size of a thunderbolt.

it's important to note that afaik there's only a FW sized version ever produced so its important to understand how you may want this used. I should also point out nothing prevents Count-As with any existing flyers you have. I've dug up a few items on shapeways that should fit for a good lightning proxy for truescale flyers. You want me to dig those up?

Most of my stuff is GW or GW scale so FW scale models will look a bit odd, so I want to avoid them, although the fact that two FW Lightnings are up for more than £70 on eBay is a factor too!

Wow, that looks great. The size seems large compared to the AI models (I only have eldar). I'm not sure what he means by "80 mm scale"-- I'm assuming different from what we mean when we say 6mm. I'd snap up a 1/270 to 1/300 version.

That's a big hole in the existing 3rd party ranges. I see a lot of star wars-ish and BSGesque stuff, but very little original space fighters. A good approach would be to release in fleetscale (ie for BFG/Full Thrust) and 1/270 (X-wing/aeronautica/FW epic scale).

Certainly at the prices that FW aeronautica models fetch on ebay, there's at least some market. You'll never sell as many fighters as you do tanks, and I suppose the volume issue is the problem, but shapeways seems ideal if someone's a great sculptor and doesn't need big profits to pay the rent. (hint hint hint you know who you are....)

Yeah I was originally going to ping to see about them getting reduced in size to fit in the AI but them instumbled into a whole mess of flyers so never bothered. Probably worth a quick PM to them. There's someone else there that had a whole ton of Wing Commanderesque flyers as well (like 20 different designs). I'll try to find them.
