Post subject:  Night Lords: a work in progress

I fell in love with Chaos Space Marines after my first EPIC demonstration. After months of borrowing Emperor's Children, I wanted something for my own! I wanted something different, that I didn't think many people would play, and happened upon the Night Lords. Well, I guess you could say I fell in love again...a Chaos army that's supposed to be in your face, all shock and awe, go big or go home? Plus, all that lightning would prove quite a challenge to get on the armor...

I'll post periodic pictures of my progress, the army's maybe 1/3 painted.

To lead off, here's a Raptor Cult (proxied by Exodus Wars Edenite Jump Troops) that I've given wing-a-ling skull helmets! They still need lightning on them, but otherwise I'm pretty pleased with how they're coming along.

Here's a WIP pic of my reaver titan. I'm not 100% happy with how the lightining it turning out, and it needs to be based. Looks pretty on the table, though.

More to come, please feel free to offer advice!

Hey they look the goods with the wing-a-lings you've achieved that night lord feel. What are your plans for the bases or are leaving them el'natural?
Looking forward to seeing more...

Having played against them, I have to say Ruth's Night Lords look great.

I'm glad you like the wing-a-lings! (I think of Trogdor every time I write/say it, haha)

I think (for now) i'm going to leave the bases with that natural look? I may go with a very dark (black) wash, and then do a drybrushed glow around each model from the lightning on them, if i'm feeling ambitious. I'd like to simulate a night feel to them if I can, without it looking forced.

With the titan, I WANT to make lightning arcing from him to the ground, or surround him with lightning bolts, but I'm not sure of the best way to do it yet. I'm open to suggestions! Right now the current thought process is to take really thin plasticard, cut out a bunch of lightning bolts connected by a thin strip on the bottom, and wrap it around the base, connecting them at the top? But that feels REALLY ambitious!

The burninator!!

As to arced lightning there was someone on the boards that had one of the best ork armies I've ever seen (sorry I forget who it was now) that had shock guns and weirdboy towers with arcs everywhere made from wire. Pretty clever and effective. Go dig around and you'll find it.

I have seen electicity done with bristles from a fine wire brush scrunched to give them that random sharp direction changes.

I'd been considering wire...i'll have to pick some up at the local craft store and mess around with it...probably also going to want florist tape, to thicken up certain parts, or cover where i twisted wire together. Now i've got a project for Monday's painting night at the LGS!

Nice work on those Raptors, must've been a lot of work doing all those crests!

Perhaps with the Titan use wire to make the lightning arc, just slightly, off the model as it moves from point to point. It'll give a more ethereal look if it's jumping off the blue armour and won't be a massive ball-ache to store/transport safely

Another consideration is to magnatise your force which would greatly reduce the chance of light/electricity being damaged in transport/ storage. I did that for my ultras and it makes life quick and easy.

Was it Largo_W's fantastic Ork army maybe?
