Hello,

Havent posted here for so long that I dont think anyone will remember it... Anyway I dug out some minis and started painting again a while ago, but found out I have a couple of problems: I have a IG army painted mainly in the old citadel codex grey paint. I still have a few minis to paint for the army to be completed (and it is turning out quite nicely in fact). However Im out of this particular paint and codex grey seems to be one of very few old citadel paints which does not have an exact equivalent in the current Coat d'arms range (at least according to an online compability chart I found at another website).

I suspect other people have had the same problem? Any suggestions? There are many shades of grey available from e g Vallejo and Coat d'arms, but is any one close enough so that the difference wont be noticeable?

Would be grateful for help on this, it is a small but very annoying problem...

Thanks, but in fact that is the chart I was thinking of: Cold grey is supposed to be the Vallejo equivalent of codex grey, but I dont know if the match is exact enough...

I have been using Vallejos London grey (836) as its replacement. The chart recommends Basalt Grey (869) which I find works great as a basecoat, but to my eyes seems more like a black/grey then the white/grey colour of codex grey.

I use the Basalt Grey (869) as a basecoat, London grey (869) as the medium and Pale greyblue (907) as a drybrush/highlight, and I dont see any difference then when I was using GW greys.

The london grey would be your best bet- but it really depends on how 'clean' you IG are. I was using codex grey for dirty old goblins and rocks, and therefore any slight colour differences to me were insubstantial any way!

I use vallejo cold grey, but TBH I can't really remember what codex grey was like and which minis were painted with codex any more. I seem to remember it being a decent enough match, but I suspect batches vary anyway.

I use mechanicus standard grey form the new range. It's probably not perfect, but very close.

Codex grey is a blueish grey; cold grey is a little more purplish, but the difference is very small.

Same here, and the new miniatures slotted in right next to the old ones with no real difference.

OK, thanks for those tips, I will try both Vallejo cold grey and GW Mechanicus grey. If they dont match perfectly I might be able to solve it by adding an small amount of black, white or something like that.

Correction! Correction!

I use Dawnstone!

Sorry, I remembered wrong. I didn't have the paint conversion chart with me at the time. Now that I'm home though (and can see the chart and my paints) I see that I used Dawnstone, and the new figs fit right in with the old ones.

After trying out Vallejos Cold Grey I would say I am quite happy with it - it isnt a perfect match but close enough.

Thanks again for the input!

Sorry, bit late to this.

i can thoroughly recommend Army Painter's Uniform Grey as a very close match - plus it comes in a spray can...

Must admit a friend and i have mixed results with their sprays - occasionally a little bit textured we find. But it is very humid down this way. I'm not too bothered as a bit of texture looks good on guard, but he paints eldar and is not impressed.

To be honest I try not to see the brand of paint as much of an indicator of anything. Sure there may be QC consistency factor when it comes to the manufacturing, but each colour has its own formulation and so I find that the range of paints offered by a manufacturer tend to be very variable. For example GW's metals were always awesome (i.e. the ones Coat d'Arms make now) but the yellows were awful. And of course the sprays are different to the bottled paints, even if they colour match them they are different formulations.

For Army Painter sprays my Uniform Gray was great, the black was also fine but something nozzle clogged up after only a few uses and wouldn't atomise, so I had to throw away the whole can.
